Dear Shrevewood Families,
It has been an incredibly vibrant and busy week here at Shrevewood. Our hallways have been buzzing with the energy of students discussing some of the fun and engaging opportunities they have had this week. We kicked off the week with âPop Quiz: The Math and Science Game Showâ assembly which was an electrifying experience, and it was wonderful to see our students so engaged and competitive. We want to extend a massive thank you to our PTA for organizing and funding this memorable learning experience for our students.
In addition to our activities at school, several of our grade levels and teams explored the community this week. Our 4th grade students traveled to Jamestown and had a wonderful time seeing history come alive outside of the classroom. Additionally, our Young Scholars and News Crew teams took a trip to the Sprague Technology Center in FCPS. This field trip gave students hands-on experience producing a news show, where they explored roles ranging from on-air anchors to behind-the-scenes camera operators and producers. We are also very much looking forward to Career Day tomorrow, as it provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about diverse professions and envision their own futures.
As we look toward next week, we are excited to host our Book Fair. With April being School Library Month and National Library Week, it is the perfect time to recognize our fabulous Librarian, Mrs. Oswalt. Her dedication to fostering a love of reading and ensuring our library is a welcoming space for every student is truly unmatched.Â
As a reminder, next Tuesday, April 21 is a Teacher Workday and students will not have school due to the special election. Additionally, the 3-hour early release on Wednesday, April 22 has been cancelled. All students will be dismissed at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday. Thank you for your continued support in making Shrevewood such a special place to learn.
Sincerely,
Katie Vandawalker, Principal

Our Bookworm Central Spring BOOK FAIR is here!  Students will visit the fair with their class during their regular weekly Library time (except for classes normally at Library on Tuesdays, who will attend on Wednesday instead) from Friday, April 17, through Thursday, April 23.  Weâre skipping the wish lists this year, so there will be only one scheduled visit to the fair per class.  Good news â students who wish to make additional purchases can return to the fair another day!  Payment can be made via cash, check, card, or eWallet (click here to setup an eWallet for your student).  If you set up an eWallet for our December fair, the account will still be there now. On Monday, April 20, we will have a Family Shopping Night from 4:05 until 7:00 p.m.  Itâs a great chance to see other families in our community, foster a love of reading, and help our schoolâs library add titles to the collection for all to enjoy. See you at the fair!
Dear Elementary School Partners,
We would love to invite you to attend our upcoming production of Once Upon a Mattress- Youth Edition! Our students have been working incredibly hard, and we are excited to share their talents with our feeder schools.
Once Upon a Mattress is a lively and hilarious twist on the classic tale of The Princess and the Pea. Filled with quirky characters, catchy songs, and lots of humor, the story follows a bold and unconventional princess who must pass an outrageous test in order to win the hand of a prince and shake up the kingdom along the way.
Performances will take place on:
- Friday at 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (matinee) and 7:00 p.m.
As a special thank-you to our feeder schools, you can use the code FEEDER when purchasing tickets to receive $2.00 off each ticket. The direct ticket link can be found here: https://etix.com/ticket/v/15622/kilmer-middle-school
We hope to see you there and celebrate the arts together!

On Monday, April 6, parents and guardians of Shrevewood E.S. received an email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and provides an opportunity to share anonymous feedback about our schoolâs leadership and environment.
Topics covered in the survey include:
â
Instructional leadership
â
School climate
â
Management (human resources and organizational)
â
Communication and community relations
â
Culturally responsive and equitable leadership
â
Professionalism
The questionnaire will be open April 6 - April 19 and will be collected online. When you receive the email invitation, please take a few minutes to complete it. Your input is valuable and helps shape the future of our school. Thank you for your time and feedback!
As required by the Code of VA, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend at a Virginia public school.
In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:Â
- Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older
- Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older Â
- A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccineÂ
- After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your childâs healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Immunization appointments are available. Inspire Health Alliance will be providing immunizations for currently enrolled FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Visit the Inspire Immunization Events Student Registration webpage to schedule an appointment.Â
Additional Immunization Resources are also available.

Volunteer Registration Update
Due to the overwhelming response from our community, FCPS is temporarily pausing fingerprint requirements for most Level 3 volunteers.Â
If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS will be charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
Those who have already been fingerprinted will be processed to be eligible for all Level 3 opportunities. âââââââ
Field trip chaperone opportunities will now be classified as Level 2 (not requiring a background check).Â
To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude.
Want to volunteer? Visit Volunteer FCPS to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Contact Volunteers@fcps.edu with any questions.
As a reminder, all volunteers â and visitors to a school â are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
For full details, visit the Volunteer FCPS website or contact our Volunteer Point of Contact, Pilar Quintero Flores, pjquinterofl@fcps.edu, with questions.
We are excited to open our cafeteria for parents and guardians to join their children for lunch at school! We know how much you value connecting with your child, and this is a great chance to share a special moment during the school day.
If you'd like to have lunch with your child, please follow these steps:
- Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.Â
- Using a government issued photo ID, sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.Â
- Wear the visitor sticker at all times.Â
- Report directly to the cafeteria.Â
- Enjoy lunch with your child(ren).Â
- Return to the main office to check-out using your visitor sticker.Â
- Please don't visit the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue without interruption for our students.Â
- Please do not bring fast food for lunch.Â
- Please do not bring any food to share with other children due to safety protocols and allergies.
Please remind your child that FCPS is phone-free! For elementary school students, this means:
- Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
- Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office. Learn more about FCPSâ cell phone and personal device policy.
As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.
Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your childâs well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.Â
Parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.
Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, students will enter their student ID number as their cafeteria PIN at the cash register to receive their meals.  You can access your studentâs ID number via ParentVUE.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast will be $1.75. Lunch will be $3.25. Money can be added to your child(ren)âs accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com. You may also write a check to Shrevewood Food Services and deliver it to our Food Services Manager. During the school year, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://linqconnect.com/public/menu/ESSF44.
Free and Reduced-Price Status
Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September. A new application must be completed each new school year. Forms are available online now: https://www.fcps.edu/frm. Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September.
