A Note From Principal Seward
Dear South Lakes Families and Seahawk Community,
Last Thursday evening’s JROTC Ball was truly a standout event. It was a pleasure to see our cadets honor military traditions with such pride, poise, and professionalism. Moments like these reflect not only the strength of our program, but also the character of our students. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Colonel Bullard and Sergeant Handy for their tireless commitment to creating such a meaningful and memorable experience for our cadets.
Our spring sports season is now in full swing, and there is great energy across our athletic programs. I want to wish all of our Seahawk teams the very best this week as they continue to demonstrate determination, teamwork, and school pride. We look forward to supporting you throughout the season.
Academically, we are off to a strong start in the fourth quarter. It has been encouraging to see our students and staff maintaining a high level of focus and commitment as we begin preparations for upcoming SOLs, IB exams, and end-of-course assessments. This is a critical stretch of the school year, and I encourage all students to stay engaged, attend regularly, and take full advantage of the supports available.
I also want to encourage our community to come out and support our performing arts program at this year’s spring musical, 9 to 5. Our theater students have invested an incredible amount of time and effort into this production, and it promises to be an outstanding show. Thank you to Mr. Viola for his leadership and dedication to our students. We hope to see many of you there supporting our talented performers.
As we look ahead, we invite all students and families to join us for our upcoming PTSA meeting on Wednesday, April 15 at 7:00 PM. This is a valuable opportunity to stay connected, share your voice, and hear directly about the great work happening here at South Lakes High School.
Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and for all that you do to make South Lakes a vibrant, supportive, and thriving community.
With Gratitude,
Carlos Seward
We value your feedback. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.

South Lakes High School - Get2Green Team
This past winter, students participating in the Get2Green program planted seeds for hardy plants such as winter lettuce and spinach. They also learned about proper care during winter months to ensure growth of these plants. This past week, the students were able to make their first harvest of lettuce, spinach and radishes. In addition to taking some home, there was enough to donate to the SLHS food pantry. Teachers will soon receive instructions how they can take their classes outside and enjoy this beautiful space.
SLHS IB French Students Featured in French Music March Madness Video
Our IB French 1 class was selected to be featured in the French Music March Madness. This is a global event uniting about 7,000 schools around the world.
It starts with 16 songs. They studied artists, culture, vocabulary and more. The songs battle it out, just like the basketball March Madness. After every match, a “reveal” video is made announcing the winner. The students love watching the “reveal” videos so, our IB French teacher, Laura Bachman, took the initiative and followed all the required steps, including parent permission slips, in hopes of being featured. The students planned, choreographed and Mme. Bachman filmed, and they were selected!
Link to the video:
Manie 2026 - Match 12 - Et si vs. No Fear
If you go to around 2:59 of the video, you’ll see “South Lakes” in the left corner.
Congratulations to our IB French students and Mme Bachman!

Become Unskippable: Share the Facts About Fentanyl With Teens
Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug, and what they can do to keep themselves and their communities safe.
Share these important facts with your child:
- Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
- More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in 10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
- Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
- Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.
Learn more about how to have conversations with your child in a way that will make you Become Unskippable.
