Weekly Wave: April 13

Principal's Message

Lake Anne Families,

We are excited to share that we have officially entered the final quarter of the school year! This is always such a meaningful time, as we watch our students grow, build confidence, and begin applying all they have learned throughout the year. We look forward to seeing them continue to thrive in the weeks ahead.

As we head into this important stretch, we also want to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance. Our current chronic absenteeism rate has risen to 13.9%, and we are working hard to bring it below 10% by the end of the year. Your partnership is essential in helping us reach this goal, and we greatly appreciate your continued support in ensuring students are present and ready to learn each day.

We also want to celebrate a wonderful event from this past Friday—our Kindergarten Orientation! It was a joy to welcome our newest Dolphins and their families. We are already looking forward to having them join our school community in Fall 2027.

To wrap up the week, we are excited for our 6th Grade Basketball Challenge against Forest Edge! We hope you’ll come out and cheer on our students for what is sure to be a fun and spirited event.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support of our school community!

Mrs. Jill Stewart, Principal
Mrs. Valencia Chenier, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Leslie Grumbach, Assistant Principal

About the Program

Trained facilitators from the Department of Family Services (DFS) will visit our classrooms to lead age-appropriate lessons from the Speak Up Be Safe prevention education curriculum. These sessions (lasting 45–60 minutes) focus on teaching children practical skills to:

  • Identify and prevent bullying and neglect.
  • Interrupt cycles of child abuse.
  • Build the confidence to speak up to trusted adults.

Save the Date: Family Information Night

We understand that parents may have questions about the curriculum and how these topics are handled. We invite you to join us for a presentation led by DFS staff:

  • When: Tuesday, April 14th @ 6:00 PM
  • Where: In-person (School Cafeteria) or Virtually (https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/99028151131)
  • Recording: For those unable to attend, the session will be recorded and shared afterward.

Next Steps & Opt-Out Information

Following the family presentation on April 14th, we will distribute detailed information sheets and opt-out forms to all families. Our entire staff will also be undergoing training on April 8th to ensure we are fully prepared to support our students through this program.

Note: Our goal is to partner with you to keep our children safe, informed, and empowered. We look forward to seeing you on April 14th!

Próximos pasos e información para exclusión (opt-out)

Weather Safety

FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety, including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

Language Arts Updates

📚 Halfway Through Journeys and Themes in Language Arts 📚

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored stories involving quests, challenges, and problem solving.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: Which character has been your favorite from this unit and why?
  • Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
