A Message from Principal Crews
Dear Hornet Families,
We had a busy short week last week with our 4th grade Field Trip to Jamestown and The Kindergarten Orientation for new families. It is always so exciting to meet new future Hornets!
Now, it's time to gear up: this week will be our first full five-day week of school since the break! It’s the perfect opportunity to settle back into our learning rhythms.
A few quick tips for a smooth transition back:
-
Check those backpacks: Make sure all library books and folders have made their way back to school. Progress reports will be coming home on Thursday.
-
Reset routines: Getting back into consistent bedtime routines and morning routines will help students feel rested and ready to learn.
-
Stay consistent: We have a lot of ground to cover before summer, and every day counts! Please make sure your students are coming to school every day and on time.
Thank you for your support and continued partnership!
Sincerely,
Principal Crews
April is National School Library Month
April is National School Library Month, a time to recognize the important role our school library plays in supporting learning, creativity, and a love of reading for all students. Our library is more than just a place to check out books—it’s a welcoming space where students explore new ideas, build research skills, and discover stories that inspire them. Our library is the heart of the school.
A big thank you to our school librarian, Mrs. Tucker, and our library assistant, Ms. Springer, for creating such a vibrant and engaging environment for our students!
Celebrate Purple Up Spirit Week: April 13–17
Get ready to show your school spirit during Purple Up Spirit Week, happening April 13 through April 17! This special week is dedicated to honoring military families and recognizing the sacrifices made by those who serve.
Each day features a fun theme to help students and staff participate while showing appreciation:
-
Monday – PJ Day: Kick off the week by wearing your pajamas as a reminder that we sleep safely thanks to the protection of military members around the world.
-
Tuesday – Camo Day: Blend in and stand out by dressing in your favorite camouflage outfit or hat.
-
Wednesday – Purple Up Day: Wear purple to show support for military families—purple symbolizes all branches of the military.
-
Thursday – Crazy Hat Day: Tip your hat to those who serve by wearing your most creative or wacky hat.
-
Friday – Wear Red Day: End the week by wearing red to honor and remember those who are currently deployed.
We encourage everyone to join in the fun and take part in this meaningful week of recognition and school spirit. Let’s come together to show our appreciation and support for military families in our community!

HMES April Lexia Challenge
This April, Hollin Meadows is excited to introduce its very first April Lexia Challenge, a school-wide initiative designed to boost literacy skills through teamwork, consistency, and a little friendly competition.
Running from April 6 through April 30, students will participate in mixed grade-level teams, working together to achieve the highest average number of Lexia units each week. The goal is simple: stay engaged, keep learning, and support one another in reaching new milestones.
The challenge comes with a motivating theme: “April units, bring May knowledge!”—encouraging students to build strong habits now that will pay off in the months ahead.
To keep things fair and focused, each student can complete up to 12 units per week at school, and weekly leaderboards will be shared to track team progress and celebrate achievements along the way.
The excitement doesn’t stop there—the winning team will earn a special reward: a Level Up Limbo Party, a fun celebration of their hard work and success.
This challenge is a great opportunity for students to collaborate across grade levels, strengthen their reading skills, and enjoy the journey of learning together. Let the Lexia challenge begin!

Benchmark/Literacy Updates
Halfway Through Journeys and Themes in Language Arts
We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored stories involving quests, challenges, and problem-solving.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Which character has been your favorite from this unit and why?
- Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
