Month of the Military Child & Purple Up Day!
April is the Month of the Military Child, and at Cub Run we are proud to celebrate the incredible strength, resilience, and spirit of our military-connected students.
Join us on Purple Up Day, April 15th, by wearing purple to show your support and appreciation. Purple Up Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military. As a Purple Star School, this day is especially meaningful to our community. It is a chance for all of us to stand together and recognize the sacrifices our military families make, especially the children who walk our halls each day. Let’s turn Cub Run purple and show our students just how much they are seen, valued, and celebrated!
FCPS Military Family Field Day will be held April 18. This fun-filled day celebrates all FCPS military-connected children and families. Military Family Field Day will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m. at Annandale High School’s football stadium (4700 Medford Dr, Annandale, VA 22003).

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for April
Tuesday, April 21, is a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.
Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.
This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days. Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused. A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.
As of April 10, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has increased to 11.7%, being in the yellow zone. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can move into an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.
Did you know? Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Consistent attendance helps students build confidence, maintain friendships, and stay on track with their lessons.
Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit our website for more attendance resources.
Storywalk
Hello Cub Run Families! We need your help. Our StoryWalk has been vandalized (written on, broken, knocked over, pages taken out of the signs, etc.). If you see anyone damaging the StoryWalk, please report it to the school. We know that the community has access to the fields and it may not even be anyone from our school or community, but hopefully if everyone keeps an eye out, it will prevent future issues. Unfortunately, we need to do repairs and will put up a new story soon. Thank you for your assistance in helping keep our StoryWalk at Cub Run!
Positivity Project
This week, our school is focusing on the character strength of Humor. Humor means enjoying laughter and bringing smiles to others.
Humor helps us see the lighter side of things, making tough times easier and more fun. It doesn't mean you have to tell jokes, but people with humor often notice the funny moments in life and share them with others. Humor can lift people's spirits and help them through challenges. It’s important to help students understand how to use humor in a kind way, to lift others up, and never at someone else's expense.
To practice and encourage the character strength of humor at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
