Dear Irving Middle School Families,
Welcome back from Spring Break—we hope you had a restful and enjoyable time with your families! I’m excited to share that Ms. Emily Cincinnati has been named the new principal of Irving Middle School, bringing a strong record of instructional leadership, student success, and community-focused practices. It is exciting to have Ms. Cincinnati returning to Irving Middle School. I will work closely with Ms. Cincinnati during this transition.
I invite you to join me at our PTA meeting next Tuesday, April 14th to hear from Sandy Anderson, current Chair of the FCPS School Board and Springfield District Representative. This will be a great opportunity to hear more about your opportunities to support our school and county.
Military Family Field Day April 18, 2026
Fairfax County Public Schools is excited to celebrate our military-connected children and families with a fun-filled Field Day! You may also sign up to provide a food/beverage item for purchase as a fundraiser for your organization.
Military Family Field Day will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m. at Annandale High School’s football stadium (4700 Medford Dr, Annandale, VA 22003). Set up for the event will begin at 11 a.m., with tear down immediately following the event.
As the sponsor of an activity or food/beverage item, your organization is responsible for the materials, set up, tear down, volunteers, and supervision of your activity during the event.
Action Required
Register to sponsor an activity or provide a food/beverage item for purchase.
April Statewide Election: No School for Students
There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.
FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on Tuesday, April 21, at participating schools. The meals must be eaten on site, and enrichment activities will be available for the children. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage.
Prepare for Summer Learning and Fun for Students
Registration is open or will be available soon for summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.
Career and Technical Education and Institute for the Arts Camps
Career and Technical Education camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Robinson Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Tuition assistance is available to FCPS families eligible for free or reduced meals.
CTE Summer Academy (CSA) is a week-long enrichment program that allows students in grades 6-11 to dive deeper into CTE program areas, develop skills, and begin career exploration. Watch this video about CTE camps. Registration is open for these programs through Friday, June 5.
Institute for the Arts (IFTA) is a two-week camp for students currently in grades 6-11. Students select from nearly 60 classes in art, dance, music, and theater. Rising freshmen have the option to take Health and PE 9 through IFTA as well!
Production Camp is a four-week summer theatre intensive for students in grades 6-11. Students in performance or technical theatre tracks rehearse, design, and build a musical in a collaborative atmosphere. The show is presented to the public at the end of camp.
New this year: Students in the above camps can also register for aftercare, which is available from 2 to 5 p.m.
We’re happy that students quickly got back into the routine of visiting the library on the first day back from Spring Break. A new puzzle is started. Rounds of Uno, and chess resumed during break, and we have heard from several students about what they read over the last week.
Coming up next Wednesday, our Irving MS Battle of the Books team will compete in the county-level competition at Katherine Johnson Middle School. Our group of ten students have been diligently preparing for the evening event. Best of luck to the team!
Starting next week all of our 7th grade English classes will be visiting the library to borrow books for a 4th quarter book project. Two things that you can do to help prepare your 7th grader: 1.) Make sure that they’ve returned their overdue library books; those with long overdues from the fall will receive notices on 4/8/26. 2.) Talk to your student before they visit the library to help them think of what type of fiction book they might want to read. Remind them of past titles they’ve enjoyed, or help them think about what genre or what author they might want to explore. We will be working with them when they visit, of course, and are happy to try to help them find a book that is a “perfect match” for them.
