Opening Doors: West Springfield Students Engage with Industry Professionals
On Thursday, March 12, a bus full of West Springfield High School students headed to the Instruction 2 Industry Conference, joining students across the region for a career exploration event. They had the opportunity to connect with more than 100 local professionals from in-demand career fields. This opportunity was made possible through a work-based learning grant from Educate Fairfax.
“I went to the INOVA table, and they told me all about what I needed to do to work in forensic pathology, “said WSHS junior, Chelsea Luna Villegas. “I was so excited with what they shared, and I learned so much from going,”
Students didn’t just show up unprepared – they put in the work ahead of time. In the months leading up to the conference, they attended pre-sessions with Employment and Transition Representative Rebecca Cousins and College and Career Center Specialist Jeff Toomer, where they built their resumes, practiced their elevator pitches, and mapped out which companies they wanted to connect with. FCPS Work-Based Learning Specialist Matt Bechtel also provided guidance to help both staff and students make the most of the experience.
Once there, students jumped right into conversations with professionals, explored internship and clinical opportunities, and discovered career paths they hadn’t considered before. Many said the appreciated how approachable and encouraging the recruiters were.
“I liked how welcoming the recruiters were,” said WSHS senior Opal Plodpluang. “They reassured me that I don’t need to have a lot of specialized experience to get a part-time summer job.”
Another student shared, “I liked all the different kinds of booths they had, there was booths for almost any kind of career which had me going to booths I never even considered.” With organizations like Amazon, INOVA Health Care, Metropolitan Culinary Arts Institute, Reagan National Airport, and Neighborhood Community Services in attendance (just to name a few), there was no shortage of opportunities to explore.
Students also had the chance to participate in mock interviews with industry professionals, giving them real world practice and valuable feedback.
By the end of the day, many students walked away with new connections and plans to follow up. The conference wasn’t just an event; it was a step toward their future.

Students spoke with industry professionals to learn more about potential internships, careers, and job opportunities.
