We are so proud of our talented Coates Stars who were featured this past Wednesday at the Westfield High School Art Show! Their creativity and hard work were on full display, showcasing the incredible artistic abilities within our school community. A special thank you goes to our amazing art teachers, Mrs. Afshid Reihanifard and Mr. Kenny Le, for their dedication, guidance, and support in helping our students create such outstanding pieces. We are grateful for the passion they bring to inspiring our young artists! 🎨
 In celebration of Assistant Principals Week, we join the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA) in recognizing the incredible impact assistant principals have on student success.
We are especially grateful for our Coates Star APs—Ms. Wu, Ms. Hinkson, and Ms. Gray—whose leadership, dedication, and care help our students and staff shine every day. Thank you for all that you do to support our school community! ⭐
Join us on Friday, April 17th from 5:30–8:00 p.m. for an exciting evening celebrating the rich diversity of our Coates community! Experience the many countries represented by our students through delicious food, music, cultural displays, and interactive activities.
We encourage everyone to wear colors or cultural attire that represents your heritage and take part in our cultural fashion walk to close out the evening.

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience. To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 15 for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.
Do you have a child who will be 5 years old by September 30? It’s time to register for kindergarten at Coates Elementary! We encourage families to register this week so we can begin sharing important information and updates with you.

Our Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Wednesday, May 20 from 5–6 PM. We look forward to welcoming our newest Coates Stars! Please be sure to complete registration soon so you don’t miss important communications.
There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.
FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools. The meals must be eaten on site, and enrichment activities will be available. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage.
We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored stories involving quests, challenges, and problem-solving.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Which character has been your favorite from this unit and why?
- Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) on:
