FACULTY BASKETBALL SHOWDOWN
Are you ready to see your favorite VES staff trade the classroom for the court?
Our Faculty Basketball Showdown is back! On Wednesday, April 22, the VES staff is heading to Madison High School to face off against Flint Hill Elementary. It’s more than just a game—it’s a night for our community to come together, cheer loud, and enjoy some school spirit.
Doors open at 5:30 PM for pizza, snacks, and merch. Grab your tickets through the PTA and help us show everyone why the Vikings have the biggest hearts (and the best fans)!
This PTA-sponsored fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity to build community spirit while supporting our school!
SPRING PICTURE DAY

Ready, set, cheese! Spring Picture Day is Friday, April 24!
The cameras are coming back to VES for Spring Picture Day! It’s the perfect time to freeze a moment in time before we head toward the end of the school year.
Make sure to pick out your favorite outfit and bring your best Viking spirit. We’ll see you in front of the lens!

REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS FOR RISING 7TH GRADERS

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th Graders
As required by the Code of VA, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend at a Virginia public school.
In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:
- Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older;
- Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older;
- A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
- After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Immunization appointments are available. Inspire Health Alliance will be providing immunizations for currently enrolled FCPS students at no out-of-pocket cost. Visit the Inspire Immunization Events Student Registration webpage to schedule an appointment.
Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet (PDF) for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.
Additional Immunization Resources are also available.
POSITIVE REFUSAL SKILLS

This month in our School Counseling lesson, our 5th & 6th grade students were the teachers! Students put on pre-written skits and their classmates checked off which strategies were used to refuse to go along with a choice they did not like. The students did a beautiful job and had a lot of fun supporting the characters’ positive choices. Please ask your child what strategies they use most frequently and share some of your own!
Positive Refusal Skills
- Say “No” or “No, thanks.”
- Repeat the refusal
- Use body language that says “No”
- Use a firm voice
- Call it out
- Change the subject/ Ask questions
- Give a reason
- Use humor
- Make a new plan/ Give a choice
- Ignore
- Walk away
The Refusal Skill for Self-Control ™
(1) Stop What you are Doing
(2) Name the Trouble
(3) State the Consequences
(4) Think of something else to do and move away from the
situation, while leaving the door open for friends to join you.
(5) Give yourself credit for staying in control.
