Greetings Laurel Ridge Families,
It has been an exciting week here at the Laurel Ridge as we officially kicked off the 4th Quarter. We began our final stretch of the year with a fantastic schoolwide virtual assembly featuring Christina Soontornvat, the author of our Every Lion, One Book selection, The Guardian Test. Watching our students engage with a professional author was truly inspiring! We also spent a wonderful morning welcoming our newest, littlest Lions during Kindergarten Orientation. To top it all off, the talent of our student artists was on full display last night at the Robinson Pyramid Art Show. Seeing so many families show up to support our creative Lions was a heartwarming reminder of how strong our community truly is.
With the 4th Quarter now underway, I want to emphasize the importance of consistent attendance. Every day a student is in the classroom is an opportunity for them to build on their social and academic foundations. When Lions are here, they are learning, growing, and contributing to our vibrant school culture. Let’s finish this school year strong by ensuring our students are present and ready to roar every single day!

Month of the Military Child Spirit Week is April 13-17!
April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body (including over 100 here at Laurel Ridge!). We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience.
We will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. The color purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military.
⭐ Monday, April 13th: Stars and Stripes Day
Wear stars, stripes, or anything shiny and sparkly to help our military kids shine bright! ✨
🪖 Tuesday, April 14th: Camo Day
Military kids are great at adapting to new environments. Wear camouflage (or green, brown, or black). 🌿
💜 Wednesday, April 15th: Purple Up! Day
Wear Purple to celebrate our military kids! Purple symbolizes all military branches (Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force blue).
🪖Thursday, April 16th: Favorite Branch Day
Wear the colors of your family’s branch, or your favorite branch of the military. 🎖️
🏡 Friday, April 17th: “Home is Where the Heart Is” – Pajama Day
“Home” may change often for military children. Wear pajamas to school to show you can feel safe, comfy, and “at home” wherever you are, because your heart is always with you. 💕

Every Lion, One Book!
We hope families enjoyed participating in this year's Every Lion, One Book program through the PTA. After reading The Guardian Test in March, we enjoyed a virtual visit from author Christina Soontornvat on Thursday. The recording of this visit will be available on Schoology throughout the month of April for families to view at home. In order to view the recording, log in to Schoology with your parent account (same username and password as ParentVue), and use this link: https://lms.fcps.edu/course/7929270586/materials/gp/8342292559.
Additionally, Christina Soontornvat signed bookplates for each family's copy of the book. These bookplates will be going home next Wednesday to students who are the oldest or only child in their family, so keep an eye out! You can place the bookplate in the inside cover of your book and enjoy having this signed copy in your home book collection. If your family does not wish to keep your copy of The Guardian Test, you can turn it in to the collection bin in the front lobby anytime before April 22 for our return-the-book drive. All returned books will be donated to Lynbrook Elementary, another FCPS school.

Help FCPS Sustain Excellence
Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are several upcoming opportunities to provide feedback to the county on its budget before final adoption in May. This includes public budget hearings (April 14-16) and an online survey. Learn how the FCPS budget helps us sustain our excellence.
Community Conversations
Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid
As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:
Click on a date to register to attend that event. Registration is not required, but it helps with planning, especially for child care and interpretation services. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.
Benchmark/Literacy Updates
Halfway Through Journeys and Themes in Language Arts
We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored stories involving quests, challenges, and problem-solving.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Which character has been your favorite from this unit and why?
- Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
