LCES Updates 4/10/26 This Week's Updates

A Message From the Principal

It has been a wonderful first week back from spring break! It has been a joy to see our students settle back into their routines with such enthusiasm.

The highlight of the week has certainly been watching everyone explore and enjoy our brand-new learning spaces. Seeing these areas come to life with students is exactly what we had hoped for.

As we look forward to a strong final quarter, we are also planning opportunities for you to see these improvements firsthand. The FCPS Renovation Team will soon share plans for an early May community meeting. We will share updates soon regarding the specific date and time for you to visit and access the campus.

Thank you for your continued support as we head into the home stretch of the school year!

Roofing on Monday, April 20th

Dear Lees Corner Families,

As our school renovation continues, we want to provide you with an important update regarding the next phase of work. Our necessary roofing project on the new vestibule is scheduled for Monday, April 20th.

We understand that roofing work, particularly the application of waterproofing materials like hot asphalt, can unfortunately generate noticeable odors. We want to assure you that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and our Design and Construction (D&C) team are implementing rigorous safety measures to protect all students, staff, and visitors:

Safety First: Roofing activities are never conducted directly over occupied areas. This specific work is occurring on the roof of the new additions, which are currently unoccupied by students and staff. As shared before, construction zones are clearly cordoned off with fencing and signage, and all community members must keep out of these areas.

Odor Mitigation: Mechanical systems adjacent to the work will be monitored and shut down as necessary to limit odors from entering the building. Furthermore, contractors will be using an odor suppressant (not just a scented masking agent) that acts at the molecular level to substantially reduce the release of specific compounds from the asphalt. For more information on the odor suppressant please see this PDF.

Onsite Supervision: An FCPS Design & Construction representative will be onsite whenever the contractor is working to ensure protocols are strictly followed, including keeping project materials away from air handling unit intakes. All materials used are required to be asbestos-free.

Understanding Roofing Odors

Per FCPS Design & Construction, roofing odors do not indicate a harmful exposure. Some compounds in the asphalt have very low odor thresholds—meaning you can smell them at concentrations far below the levels associated with adverse health effects.

While some individuals may experience temporary and unpleasant symptoms such as headaches, watering eyes, or nausea, these are short-term effects that can be relieved by seeking fresh air. FCPS D&C can confirm that long-term health consequences are not a result of the levels of exposure found inside the buildings during these projects.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact the main office at 703-227-3500. As needed, we will continue to field your concerns promptly to the right contacts.Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we complete this essential phase of our renovation.

Sincerely,

VaRonica Sloan & Jennifer Hutchinson

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 18, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2025-26 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, schedule an appointment with Inspire Health Alliance, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!

Calling All FCPS Students: You’re Invited to Get2Green’s First Student Action Summit!

Join fellow FCPS students in grades K-12 for an evening of learning and connecting about environmental action at schools. The Student Action Summit will take place Thursday, May 14 from 5:30-7pm in the FCPS Welcome Center at 8270 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA. The evening will include:

Student Sharing- an opportunity for students to share their Get2Green/environmental story and learn from one another’s successes.

  • Interested in sharing? Here are some topics to include: What issue are you working to solve? What did you try? Who helped? Presentation options are flexible and may include a tri-fold board, artifacts from your work, or a slidedeck. We encourage students to work as a team to share.
  • Those who choose not to present will have the opportunity to walk around, listen, and connect with those sharing.

Facilitated breakout discussions on environmental issues- talk in small groups about challenges and possible solutions to issues such as Outdoor Learning, Gardening, Zero Waste (reducing waste, food sharing, recycling), and Climate Change.

This event is open to all students in Fairfax County Public Schools. Elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult. Register for the FCPS Get2Green Student Action Summit. A confirmation email with additional details will be sent to all registrants and their families. Questions? Email Get2Green@fcps.edu. Registration closes on Friday, May 8, 2026.

Check out and share the Get2Green Student Action Summit event flyer!

Spring AAP Newsletter

FCPS is now screening students for Subject-Specific and Part-Time advanced services for the next school year. These programs provide specialized challenges for students who need instruction beyond the standard curriculum.

  • How to Apply: Parents may submit an AAP Referral Form to the LCES AART, Lauren Williams lgwilliams2@fcps.edu by April 15.
  • Next Steps: At LCES, our school committee will be screening students at the end of May to determine the best fit for services.
  • Notification: Families will be notified of eligibility status by early June.

Please see the full AAP Spring Newsletter for more specifics on the levels of service and the holistic review process.

Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for April

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

No School April 21/Meals for Students

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools. The meals must be eaten on site, and enrichment activities will be available. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage

Benchmark/Literacy Updates

Halfway Through Journeys and Themes in Language Arts

We are halfway through Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts! Across grade levels, students have explored stories involving quests, challenges, and problem-solving.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: Which character has been your favorite from this unit and why?
  • Activity: With your child, brainstorm a brand-new invention to solve a problem, like shoelaces that tie themselves or a clothes dryer that folds clothes. Ask your child to tell or write a story about someone using the invention.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
