Spartan Athletes Excel

Kudos to Elaina Primozic for her VHSL Girls Wrestling State Championship win and to Nicholas Bailey for winning the Boys Indoor Track and Field 500-meter dash title! The winning continues with the Spartan Rifle Team and team member Avana Harford winning first place in their Regional Competition! Additionally, the Science Olympiad Team won first place in their Regional Competition! Way to go, Spartans!

Mark Witzel Wins Local VFW Citizenship Educator Teacher Award

We are proud to announce that Mark D. Witzel from West Springfield HS has been selected as the local recipient of the 2025-2026 Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award.
The VFW Citizenship Education program identifies and recognizes America’s best educators who instill a sense of national pride in their students. Mr. Witzel, himself a combat veteran and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, teaches World History and United States/Virginia history, and was nominated for this honor by Dr. Jim Patrick, Principal.
The Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award was established to recognize teachers who:
• Encourage and model good citizenship and community involvement. • Utilize innovation in the classroom through new tools, resources, and approaches. • Demonstrate the ability to identify and utilize exceptional resources to facilitate learning. • Show a deep passion for the teaching profession and a personal interest in their students' success.
As the authorized entry from VFW Post 8469, Mr. Witzel’s nomination will now advance to the District 10 competition. Winners at the District level may eventually advance to the state (Department) and national levels.
Congratulations to Mr. Witzel on this well-deserved recognition of his commitment to his students and the community!

🌷 Schools and school offices will be closed March 30 to April 3 for spring break. Monday, April 6, is a teacher work day and there will be no school for students. We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break!

April is the annual celebration of Month of the Military Child, a time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide, with an emphasis on the experiences of the dependent children of military members serving at home and overseas.
We invite you to share a donut with your child on April 15th at 7:30am at West Springfield HS, Entrance 2.

The leadership program is currently accepting formal wear for prom to provide access to students in need. The collection has been extended to April 7th. Please consider donating formal wear in good condition that a teen would enjoy to make their prom night special.

 West Springfield Pyramid Art Show will hold a reception on April 15th at West Springfield High School, from 5-8 PM. The exhibit will include artwork from:

Summer Student Intern Program Applications Open
The FCPS Summer Internship Program is a six-week, paid, in-person opportunity for FCPS high school students and recent alumni enrolled in post-secondary education. The program will run from Monday, July 6, to Friday, August 14. It offers hands-on work experience across central office departments.
Interns will work alongside professionals on projects that help prepare FCPS for the upcoming school year. They will learn about current trends in fields including AI and emerging technologies, business and finance, architecture and construction, communications, safety and cybersecurity, and education and advocacy as well as participate in weekly professional development workshops.

2026 Rob Benton and Ron Tugwell Scholarship
The West Springfield High School (WSHS) Athletic Boosters is seeking applicants for the 2026 Rob Benton and Ron Tugwell Scholarship. Two (2) $1500 scholarships will be awarded in 2026!
The scholarship is intended to recognize the efforts of two WSHS student athletes who participated in a Virginia High School League (VHSL) sanctioned event, or a Fairfax County Public Schools supported club sport. Eligible activities are listed below. Participation may include, but is not necessarily limited to athletes, performers, managers, trainers, statisticians, and videographers. West Springfield High School graduating seniors who participated in these activities at WSHS at any time and have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.5 are eligible to apply. Financial need is not considered.
Scholarship applications are due on Sunday, April 5, 2026. Winners will be notified prior to the Senior Sports Banquet.

April Sibshops and SibTeens
📅Date - Friday, April 10, 2026 ⏱️ Time: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 📍Location -Gum Springs Community Center 8100 Fordson Rd, Alexandria, VA
The Sibshops workshops are for children in grades 2-6 enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools who have siblings with support needs to meet other siblings in a relaxed setting. Celebrate the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs, share sibling experiences, and receive peer support. Play games and have fun.

SibTeens is a community-building group for Middle School siblings of children with support needs in grades 6-9 enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools. We have fun activities, both recreational and art-based, as well as discussion activities. It’s a unique opportunity for students to share about their lives and support each other while normalizing their life experiences.

Walter Reed Donation Drive Save the Date
Save the date: The leadership program and Military Ambassadors Club are partnering to host a donation drive for military dependents staying long term at Walter Reed Hospital while their loved ones recover.
The donation drive will run April 9th through April 30th. Items needed are as follows: deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouth wash, large kitchen bags, toilet paper, paper towels, lysol wipes, individually wrapped snack items, and ramen.
