The Cardinal Connection: CPES News Delivered to You
Students in hall with thumbs up

Dear Cardinal Families,

We are officially on Spring Break this afternoon with early release at 1:20 p.m.

All student devices and chargers will be coming home today. Unless you have already coordinated a different plan with your child’s teacher, please ensure these stay in a safe spot so they are ready to return with us after the break.

While we want our students to rest, we know many of them love to keep their momentum going! Students are very familiar with their digital learning tools and can easily access them via Schoology. If your child is looking for some "brain-gym" time, they can log into:

  • Lexia / Power Up (Literacy)

  • ST Math (Math Problem Solving)

  • Exact Path (Individualized learning for select students)

  • myON & Learning Ally (Digital libraries and audiobooks)

We hope this week brings your family plenty of relaxation, laughter, and a well-deserved change of pace. We wish you a safe and wonderful break.

🗓️ Looking Ahead: Return to School

Please mark your calendars! Monday, April 6 is a Teacher Work Day (no school for students). We look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday, April 7.

Warmly,

Allison Hoak, Principal

Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

🌩️FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety🌦️

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety, including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

💻📱Family Engagement Survey

The survey is open Monday, March 9 - Monday, March 23. Parents/caregivers should have received an email invitation with a unique survey link from FCPS on March 9. The subject line was: FCPS Family Engagement Survey. A general survey link families can use is also available on FCPS’ website.

💜 Save the Date: "Purple Up" Day!

We have a very special celebration on Wednesday, April 15. It is "Purple Up! For Military Kids" Day. We invite all students and staff to wear purple to show our support and thank our military-connected children for their strength and sacrifices. Let’s turn our hallways into a sea of purple!

📚 Journeys and Themes in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts is about the lessons we can learn from different stories around the world. Students in K-5 will be learning about themes across cultures. Sixth grade students will learn about legendary journeys.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What’s a lesson that you’ve learned recently, or a challenge you had?
  • Activity: Pick a few of your child’s favorite books or classic stories such as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” With your child, discuss each story and whether it has a lesson.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Today is the last day to nominate teachers, instructional assistants, administrators, therapists, volunteers, and other community members who have made a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families. Nominations are open through Friday, March 27, and can be submitted online.
