NOTIFICATION OF TESTING AND RETEST PERMISSION FORM

State Assessments, Grades 3-6

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Students in grades 3-6 participate in state assessments each year. State assessments measure how students are learning grade level standards. Format and timing of state assessments vary by subject and grade level. The Standards of Learning (SOL) tests include mathematics, science in grade 5, and reading standardized tests, with an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component in grade 5.

More information about these assessments can be found on the webpage: SOL Tests in Elementary and Middle Schools (https://www.fcps.edu/node/42716). The Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/50045) outlines the division testing schedule for required assessments at each grade. School staff will contact you with the specific dates your student is scheduled to take spring SOL tests.

The state allows some elementary students who fail a spring SOL test to have another attempt before the end of the school year. Retests are not offered for the integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-6. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

If you believe your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, submit your decision using the Parent Digital Consent application (https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/technology/digital-resources/consent). This application uses your SIS ParentVUE login. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE Account, you may complete and return the form below to the school to give permission for retesting.

If you have questions about state assessments or about SOL retesting, contact your student’s teacher or the school test coordinator, Charlotte Quigley.

  • Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) on:

Click on a date to register to attend that event. Registration is not required, but helps with planning, especially for child care and interpretation services. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

County Seeking Budget Input

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. They are currently reviewing the county’s 2027 Fiscal Year Advertised Budget and are considering possible adjustments before the final county budget is adopted in May. Provide the county with feedback on how you would like your tax dollars spent by completing this survey.

Kindergarten Orientation at Greenbriar West Elementary

Friday, April 10, 2pm-3:30pm

Kindergarten families are invited to join us for an in-person orientation event where we will provide a brief introduction to kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year. This will be a chance for kindergarten students and families to meet our GBW administrators, kindergarten teachers, support staff, and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members while also taking a self-guided tour of our school.

Please mark your calendars, and we look forward to welcoming everyone into our GBW family!

Location: We gather at GBW Cafeteria first and then start the tour.

Parking:  Please remember that our school is located in a residential neighborhood. Be sure to follow all posted parking signs and avoid blocking driveways or restricted areas to prevent tickets. Please see the Parking Guidance link below:

2026-27 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please help us with projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2026, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2026, please complete this form. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2026-2027 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at pli@fcps.edu.
