BOTB

We have a winner of the B.O.T.B. school competition!  Congratulations to Team

“W.A.R.T.S.,” whose name is an acronym for those “Who Actually Read The Stories."  However, we are confident that members of the other three teams actually read too.  Eighteen students participated in the March 18th after-school competition, in which students answered questions and identified quotes from the fifteen books in the collection for the 2025-2026 school year.  It was a close race, with a come-from-behind finish.  All participants did their best and competed in a friendly manner.  Well done!  A special thanks goes to guest judges Ms. Carmenates and Ms. Healey.

Spring break is coming next week.  Plan to have books, ebooks and audiobooks in mind to fill your time.  Any student who is interested can stop by the library to ask if they want help accessing online resources.  Keep reading!

Educate Fairfax Student Bookmark Art Contest – “Today’s Reader, Tomorrow’s Leader”

Educate Fairfax, the 501(c)3 education foundation that partners with the community to support Fairfax County Public Schools students and educators, is launching a divisionwide Student Bookmark Art Contest during March. FCPS students in grades K–12 are invited to design a 2” x 7” bookmark celebrating the power of learning and creativity under the theme “Today’s Reader, Tomorrow’s Leader.”

Artwork must be original, flat (no glitter or pop-ups), and include the student’s name, grade, and school on the back. Entries will be judged on creativity, connection to the theme, and overall effort. Four winners (K–2, 3–6, middle, and high) will each receive a $25 gift card, and winning designs will be printed and shared in schools and the community. This initiative supports FCPS Goal 3 by promoting literacy and student engagement.

Submissions may be mailed to Educate Fairfax (8270 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA 22031), emailed to info@educatefairfax.org, or sent via pony mail. By submitting, students confirm FCPS enrollment and grant permission for printing and promotion (first name and grade only; parent/guardian signature required for winners).

Participants will be invited to reflect on their own contexts and consider next steps for advocacy and action.

Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Read more about these recommendations

Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

Connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) on:

Click on a date to register to attend that event. Registration is not required, but helps with planning, especially for child care and interpretation services. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

Session A | Rising 5th - 8th Grades | 9:30am-12:00pm

(Beginner through SYC/Rec Levels)

Session B | Rising 8th - 9th Grades | 12:30pm-3:00pm

(Intermediate - Travel/Club and all 9th grade levels)

Session C | Advanced Rising 10th - 12th Grades | 3:30pm - 6:00pm

(Must have High School Varsity, JV, or Elite Club Experience (9th))

If you have questions about which session to sign up for, please reach out to me, Coach Stephanie Noriega (sbnoriega@fcps.edu).  I am always happy to help.

Camp usually sells out in the first couple of weeks, so register now.

Camp Details:

Spartan Volleyball Camp is designed and has a session for athletes of all skill levels who are eager to enhance their game in a challenging and supportive environment. Camp sessions are structured by age and skill level to ensure every player receives personalized instruction and the best opportunity for growth.

Campers will have the unique opportunity to train with experienced high school coaches from across the country, as well as current college athletes. Campers in Session A and B will also get to work with the high school athletes from the Virginia State Champions team! Sessions will include individual skill development, group instruction, and competitive tournament play, all designed to help players refine their technique, build confidence, and elevate their overall performance.

Session C is ONLY for advanced players.  Unfortunately, we do not have a session for rising 10th-12th graders who are new to volleyball or who only have freshmen team level experience and/or rec volleyball experience.  Athletes attending Session C must have played on their high school Varsity or JV team or are currently playing on a competitive club team. If you are signing up for Session C, the expectation is that you are playing volleyball at or close to the Varsity level.  Most rising 9th graders should be attending session B.
