Dear Haycock Families,

It's hard to believe that we have arrived at the last week of the 3rd quarter! Students will be dismissed at 2:05 on Friday, March 27.  Teachers will use this time to work on grading and report cards.

We loved welcoming our newest Cougars this past week.  It was wonderful to meet some of our rising Kindergarten students and their families at Kindergarten Orientation. We are super excited to welcome the class of 2039 in August!

As we have done in past years, we will provide a form for parent input on class placements for the 2026-27 school year. Look for this form in April in the Haycock Hello. We consider (though we don't guarentee) parent input as we are creating classes for next school year.

We will send out a shortened Haycock Hello next Monday, March 30th. We wish all our students, families, and staff a safe and enjoyable Spring Break.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP   HABoyd@fcps.edu

Krystal Styles, AP   krstyles@fcps.edu

🐢Tiny Turtles Need Big Homes!

(And a Call for Frogs!) 🐸

Interested in adopting a baby turtle? 🐢

Big news from our school pond… we have BABY TURTLES(again)!

Our beloved school turtle, Speedy, has surprised us all, and now we have several tiny turtles looking for loving homes.

They are small, adorable, and already practicing their very slow-and-steady lifestyle. Seeking caring families ready to take on the responsibility of a turtle (they may be small, but they need proper care, an indoor or outdoor habitat, and lots of attention).

Calling all frogs and toads! 🐸 Our school pond is also hoping to grow its amphibian community.

Do you have frogs or toads native to Virginia (no bullfrogs, please) to share that would be a good fit for our school pond environment?

Thank you for helping us care for our school’s growing ecosystem.

Reach out to our Get2Green Coordinators Mr. Baker and Ms. Sklar (jabaker@fcps.edu and jsklar@fcps.edu) for more information about these opportunities.

🔖Educate Fairfax Bookmark Art Contest

“Today’s Reader, Tomorrow’s Leader”

Educate Fairfax, the 501(c)3 education foundation that partners with the community to support Fairfax County Public Schools students and educators, is launching a divisionwide Student Bookmark Art Contest during March. FCPS students in grades K–12 are invited to design a 2” x 7” bookmark celebrating the power of learning and creativity under the theme “Today’s Reader, Tomorrow’s Leader.”

Artwork must be original, flat (no glitter or pop-ups), and include the student’s name, grade, and school on the back. Entries will be judged on creativity, connection to the theme, and overall effort. Four winners (K–2, 3–6, middle, and high) will each receive a $25 gift card, and winning designs will be printed and shared in schools and the community. This initiative supports FCPS Goal 3 by promoting literacy and student engagement.

Submissions may be mailed to Educate Fairfax (8270 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA 22031), emailed to info@educatefairfax.org, or sent via pony mail. By submitting, students confirm FCPS enrollment and grant permission for printing and promotion (first name and grade only; parent/guardian signature required for winners).

Participants will be invited to reflect on their own contexts and consider next steps for advocacy and action.

🏅2026 Awards Recognizing Special Education Supporters

Honorees may include teachers, instructional assistants, administrators, therapists, volunteers, and other community members who have made a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families. Nominations are open through Friday, March 27, and can be submitted online.

Award recipients will be recognized at the SEPTA Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 2, where families, educators, and community members will gather to celebrate those helping build more inclusive and supportive school communities.
