Principal’s Message to Families
Dear Ravensworth Families,
We appreciate your support and flexibility regarding the interruptions in our school schedule this week. Our teachers have worked hard to stay on track with our division's curriculum expectations as well as providing opportunities for learning extensions. Our students have done a fabulous job maintaining focus and working hard during these past couple of weeks. We are so impressed with all that is happening every day within our classrooms!
This week’s Ravensworth ES highlights include the 6th Grade Pi Day Lesson and Pie eating celebration. Next week, our 5th graders will be participating in the IRW which is the writing component of the Language Arts SOL assessment. Please make sure your students are getting the rest and nourishments needed to perform their best.
April 10th we will be hosting our Kindergarten Orientation. If you have not registered your rising Kindergartener yet, please make sure to do this as soon as possible as this impacts our planning for next year.
Please see the information in this newsletter regarding the FCPS Family Engagement Survey. Increasing opportunities for our families to volunteer, participate, and engage with Ravensworth ES community is one of our priorities. Student achievement is directly linked to school/parent connection. We are looking for ideas to increase our partnership. We will be sending a survey out this spring for our families to provide feedback directly to our leadership team to share ideas/ways our families would like to engage with Ravensworth ES. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderfully supportive community, and we look forward to receiving your input.
Enjoy the first official weekend of spring!
Warmly,
Shannon Mueck
Principal

Phones Off, Learning On
FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students focus, learn, and engage. When students put their phones away, they have more face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers and more opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Please remind your child that:
-
Cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
-
Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call our front office at [phone number]. Visit our cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions.
📚 Finishing Up Our Exploration of Technology and Society in Language Arts 📚
Students are finishing Benchmark Unit 5 in Language Arts! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about why and how we use technology.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: What do you think life would be like if we didn’t have cell phones or the internet?
- Activity: Ask your child to predict the next big invention in transportation, communication, or entertainment. Have them sketch it, name it, and explain how it works.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Ravensworth ES New Arrival and Dismissal Traffic Flow
Thank you to all our parents, caregivers, siblings, students and staff for your willingness to support the changes to our arrival and dismissal traffic flow. These changes have been made to ensure all our students, staff, and families are safe during these very busy times of the day.
These changes include:
- One way school traffic pattern on Nutting Dr. with the Kiss and Ride entrance starting from
- No student drop offs nor pick-ups on Nutting Dr.
- Crossing of Nutting Dr. is allowed only in the cross walks
Our data shows that the new traffic flow decreased the illegal/dangerous 69 incidents measured the week before the snow closure to 3 incidents measured this week. Our goal is to have 0 incidents and with your help we know this is achievable.
