Dear TLES Community,
This past Wednesday, March 18th, the TLES staff engaged in an important professional learning experience focused on addressing instances of harmful or inappropriate language and reinforcing the importance of helping students understand the power of their words and actions. This work directly supports FCPS's Strategic Plan Goal 2: ensuring every student feels safe, supported, included, and empowered, with a strong focus on student well-being and voice.
During our learning, we deepened our commitment to equity by exploring how we can amplify student voice, honor students’ identities and experiences, and foster a school environment where every child feels a true sense of belonging. We discussed the meaning of inclusion—creating spaces where all individuals feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued—and how an inclusive climate embraces differences while promoting respect in both words and actions.
We also reflected on the concept of “othering,” or the instinct to separate into “us versus them,” and how this can negatively impact a sense of belonging. In contrast, we emphasized the importance of teaching and modeling kindness. Kindness and respect go hand in hand and serve as the foundation for empathy, positive relationships, and a strong, connected school community. Research shows that acts of kindness not only support inclusivity and appreciation of diversity, but also enhance emotional well-being for all.
Finally, our staff strengthened their understanding of how to respond to instances of unkind language, including hate speech, in ways that promote learning, accountability, and growth. We remain committed to partnering with our community to ensure that TLES continues to be a place where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered to thrive.
As a reminder, the end of the third quarter is quickly approaching at the end of the week, and with it, an early release at 1:35 and the beginning of spring break. The end of Q3 is a great time to connect with your child’s teacher to discuss their areas of strength and opportunities for growth as we prepare to enter the fourth quarter.
Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and for sharing your wonderful children with us each day. We are grateful to work alongside such a supportive and engaged community
With appreciation,
Ben Chiet, Sarah Buchanan & Lindsay Duch
Our TLES community at Roar and Explore Night
ROAR & Explore Family Learning Night!
ROAR & Explore Family Learning Night was an incredible success at TLES! We loved welcoming 328 family members into our school for an evening of hands-on learning, joy, and connection. From siblings to parents to grandparents, our halls were filled with excitement as families learned alongside their children.
One of the best moments of the night was when a 4th grade student ran up and proudly shared, “I just did 6th grade Science!!!” That excitement says it all — ROAR & Explore sparked curiosity not just for today’s learning, but for the future too.
Thank you to our amazing TLES staff for creating such a one-of-a-kind experience for our students and families! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Mrs.Souhair Darwich is Region 2's Outstanding Operational Employee!
On Wednesday, March 18th, we proudly celebrated an extraordinary member of our school community, Mrs. Souhair Darwich, who was named Region 2’s Outstanding Operational Employee! 🌟👏
Out of 40+ Region 2 schools and hundreds of operational employee nominations, Mrs. Darwich’s nomination — and more importantly, her incredible work — rose to the very top. This distinction places her among just six operational employees across all six FCPS regions, representing more than 200 schools, to earn the title of Region Outstanding Operational Employee. What an incredible honor! 💫
Mrs. Darwich exemplifies everything this recognition stands for. Through her daily work, she provides a unique and exceptional contribution to our school, demonstrates leadership and unwavering commitment, builds strong and supportive relationships with colleagues and families, and helps foster a community where equity, inclusion, and belonging remain at the center of everything we do. ❤️
We were honored to celebrate this moment today alongside School Board members Ryan McElveen and Ilryong Moon, Region 2 Assistant Superintendent Megan Vroman, and Region 2 Executive Principals Margaret Barnes and Brendan Menuey, who helped present this well-deserved recognition. 🎉
Next, Mrs. Darwich will be considered for FCPS Outstanding Operational Employee of the Year and will be invited to the upcoming FCPS Honors Event.
Mrs. Darwich, thank you for the care, heart, and dedication you bring to our students, staff, and community every single day. We are so proud of you and incredibly grateful to have you as part of our school family. 💙
