Dear Waynewood Owls,
Spring has a way of keeping us on our toes, and this past week was certainly a testament to that! Thank you for your incredible flexibility and patience during the unanticipated three-hour early release on Monday. While the severe storm warnings prompted us to prioritize safety, we were all relieved the weather ultimately missed our neighborhood. It served as a perfect, real-world opportunity to practice our safety protocols. In fact, our students did a remarkable job during our tornado drill and fire drills this week.
Safety drills weren't the only excitement filling our hallways, however. On Tuesday we had an uninvited guest in our Kindergarten classrooms. A very pesky and clever leprechaun caused some mischief. Despite the ingenious traps and creative engineering projects designed by our youngest learners, the leprechaun managed to evade capture once again. He is officially still on the loose but I suspect he’s mostly interested in causing giggles and hiding some crayons.
I want to share a note of gratitude to everyone who donated gift cards for our PTA staff raffles. Your generosity never ceases to amaze me. I’ve seen the faces of the winners as they collected their prizes, and I can tell you they are beyond excited to put those cards to good use!
Looking ahead to next week, please mark your calendars for a few schedule shifts as we wrap up the 3rd quarter. We have a three-hour early release on Wednesday and a two-hour early release on Friday, March 27. Friday marks the end of the third quarter—I can hardly believe how quickly this year is flying by! To celebrate all the hard work our students have put in, the SCA has declared Friday a very special Spirit Day. The theme is "Dress Like a Teacher or Mrs.Cachine Day." I cannot wait to see the "mini-teachers" walking around!
As a reminder, there is no school tomorrow, Friday, March 20, in observance of Eid al-Fitr. To all of our families who are celebrating: Eid Mubarak! We hope this is a beautiful time of joy, reflection, and community for you and your loved ones.

You may have noticed something new on our playground this week. Our new Alternate Communication Board has been installed. The board is designed to help all students express themselves, share their needs, and engage with friends on the playground. Communication tools like this help all students to access our playground. They help to build independence and increase opportunities for all students to build peer relationships.
Thank you to Educate Fairfax for the grant used to provide this tool on our playground!

There will be an information session, a school tour which includes a stop in a kindergarten classroom.

The 2026 Special Education Family Conference, Stronger Together: Connecting Families and Schools, will take place on Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Marshall High School.
Dr. Shelley Moore will deliver the keynote address on The Evolution of Inclusion. It will look at how the goals of inclusion have continued to shift and evolve, as we learn more about diversity and identity. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own contexts and consider next steps for advocacy and action.

Connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) on:

🌸Join the Waynewood PTA for a fun-filled evening at the Spring Fling on Thursday, April 16 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM on the WWES Field & Grounds!
🎶Families can enjoy a DJ, face painting, inflatables, food trucks, a photo booth, bake sale, and the always-popular Gift Card Raffle.
🎟 $10 wristbands include one raffle entry per student. Raffles happening at ~6:45, 7:00, and 7:15 PM. Bring the whole family, a picnic blanket and celebrate spring with our school community! Buy tickets here!
The WABC sponsored West Potomac Girls Basketball Spring Clinic is back for another year! This weekly clinic, which will take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00-7:30pm at West Potomac beginning in April, is open to all girls in Grades 5-8.
