Message from the Principal
Dear Irving Middle School Families,
We are writing to make you aware of concerns that have recently been shared with us by the Fairfax County Police Department regarding student behavior in the Old Keene Mill Shopping Center after school hours.
According to information provided by local law enforcement and businesses, there has been an increase in problematic behaviors in the shopping center area after school and on the weekends. Reported incidents have included destruction of property, physical altercations between students, and shoplifting.
While these incidents are occurring outside of school hours and off school grounds, we believe it is important to keep our families informed so that you are aware of the situation. We encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about appropriate behavior in the community and to ensure that students are adequately supervised after school, particularly if they plan to visit the shopping center.
Our goal is to work together as a community to promote safe, respectful behavior and to maintain positive relationships with our local businesses and neighbors.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students and our community.
Warm regards,
Kathleen Quigley
Principal

Spring Break🌷
Schools and school offices will be closed March 30 to April 3 for spring break. Monday, April 6, is a teacher work day and there will be no school for students. We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break! See the complete school year calendar.
Library News:
Stay tuned for changes in the library. Thanks to a generous PTA grant, the students will soon see some new additions to the library space. We’ll post pictures!
This week’s informal student-survey results interest me so much. When asked “Would you rather be PERPETUALLY dizzy? Or be SPORADICALLY smelly?” our Irving students made it clear that they don’t want to stink–ever. An overwhelming 79% of students chose to be dizzy all of the time, rather than to occasionally smell bad. I’ll have to say that the adults in the building were shaking their heads at the student response, in part because as those few warm days last week reminded us, the application of deodorant is sometimes forgotten by our middle schoolers. Either there is a misunderstanding of “perpetually,” or the students have never been really dizzy. Anyway, that’s one of the things that is fun to learn about the way kids think!
By this time next week Irving will have its winning team that will advance to compete in the county-wide Battle of the Books Competition. Our school-based teams battle it out in the library after school on March 18th.
Spring break is coming fairly soon. Plan to have books, ebooks and audiobooks in mind to fill your time. Keep reading!

Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update
Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.
If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Read more about these recommendations.

County Seeking Budget Input
About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. They are currently reviewing the county’s 2027 Fiscal Year Advertised Budget and are considering possible adjustments before the final county budget is adopted in May. Provide the county with feedback on how you would like your tax dollars spent by completing this survey.

Camp Details:
Spartan Volleyball Camp is designed and has a session for athletes of all skill levels who are eager to enhance their game in a challenging and supportive environment. Camp sessions are structured by age and skill level to ensure every player receives personalized instruction and the best opportunity for growth.
Campers will have the unique opportunity to train with experienced high school coaches from across the country, as well as current college athletes. Campers in Session A and B will also get to work with the high school athletes from the Virginia State Champions team! Sessions will include individual skill development, group instruction, and competitive tournament play, all designed to help players refine their technique, build confidence, and elevate their overall performance.
Session C is ONLY for advanced players. Unfortunately, we do not have a session for rising 10th-12th graders who are new to volleyball or who only have freshmen team level experience and/or rec volleyball experience. Athletes attending Session C must have played on their high school Varsity or JV team or are currently playing on a competitive club team. If you are signing up for Session C, the expectation is that you are playing volleyball at or close to the Varsity level. Most rising 9th graders should be attending session B.
