CES Family Connection - March 13

English | Español | አማርኛ | 中文 | 한국어 | Tiếng Việt | العربية | فارسی | اردو

Happy Friday!

What a week it has been! We swung from the first hints of Spring right back into a surprise snowfall yesterday. In light of this week's unpredictable weather, our Eagles practiced a tornado drill. We were incredibly impressed by their focus and exemplary behavior during the drill! This week, all students in grades K–6 participated in mid-year presentations regarding Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). These sessions serve as an important reminder of the expectations here at Centreville Elementary and their roles as students within Fairfax County Public Schools. We encourage you to talk with your child about what they learned and how they can continue to contribute to a positive school environment

Also, please do not forget that our Starch Madness is continuing. Our donation challenge continues throughout March! Please drop off your contributions of pasta, rice, grains, and cereal in the bus lobby. Additionally, our third grade students enjoyed their field trip today! They had a blast at the National Museum of Natural History, exploring everything from towering dinosaurs to the wonders of ocean life.

Finally, please save the date for Saturday, April 11th, at 9:00 AM as we host our first annual Hero Hike at CES. We are coming together to honor our veterans, service members, and first responders with a meaningful trek around our CES campus. To symbolize the commitment of our heroes, participants are invited to carry a backpack filled with non-perishable food items. Following the hike, all collected goods will be donated to a local military food bank to support those who serve. If you would like to donate to this cause, click HERE. We hope to see you there!

New Visitor System & App

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Phones Off, Learning On

FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students focus, learn, and engage. When students put their phones away, they have more face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers and more opportunities to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Please remind your child that:

  • Cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.

If you need to contact your child during the school day, please call our front office at 703-502-3500. Visit our cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions

display

This year, our front display case will incorporate a collaborative approach between CES teachers and families. We will use the FCPS recognized heritage and celebration months. Families and CES staff are invited to share books, artifacts, pictures, etc. for each month.

Windows represent the opportunities we have to learn about different cultures, abilities and backgrounds. Mirrors represent children feeling valued and gives them a sense of belonging which can help validate their own experiences and identities. Doors represent experiencing another life and promotes empathy.

We will celebrate Women’s History Month in March.  If your family wants to send something in, please contact Aubrey Thorne- adthorne@fcps.edu

Pre-K and Early Head Start Programs

pre-K

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors, ages 6 weeks to 4 years, living in Fairfax County.

  • Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children who will be 3 years old by September 30 of the same year.
  • Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from pregnancy to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Space is limited and provided based on need, not on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications are accepted online, by email, by mail, or in person at the program office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.

If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).

💜 April is the Month of the Military Child 💜

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is gearing up to honor and celebrate its military-connected youth in April, the Month of the Military Child, and on Purple Up! Day!

This year, Virginia will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military.

FCPS Purple Up! T-shirts and other items are available for purchase now through Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in our Custom Ink online store. These items highlight our gratitude and appreciation for our 14,500 military-connected students and their families. #PurpleUpFCPS!

Fun in the sun! ☀️ We soaked up every bit of that gorgeous spring weather this week. From racing down the slides to catching up with friends, we love every opportunity to connect and play during recess! 🦅🛝✨

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.

Also, join FCPS staff for Countdown to Kindergarten, a virtual event designed to help families prepare for this exciting transition! The webinar will take place on Friday, March 27, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

During this webinar, families will learn practical tips and essential information to support their child's smooth and successful start to kindergarten in Fairfax County Public Schools. Register to receive the event link
