We are proud to share that our Chronic Absenteeism rate has dropped by 5.9% compared to this same time last year, going from 10.5% to just 4.6%! This is a tremendous accomplishment and a true testament to the power of partnership between our families and our school community. Thank you for prioritizing attendance!
All absences, both excused and unexcused, count toward chronic absenteeism. A student who misses 10% of the school year, which averages just 2 days per month, for any reason is considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism is also factored into our school’s accreditation.
How can you continue to help? Partner with us! Outside of illness, family trips are one of the most common reasons for student absences. We encourage families to plan vacations during scheduled school holidays and breaks whenever possible. When students are here consistently, they stay connected and on track with their learning.
Thank you for working alongside us and helping our students show up and thrive every day! #everydaymatters

Stop by the Reston Community Center at Lake Anne Plaza this month to view artwork from Sunrise Valley and the South Lakes Pyramid on display! We’re proud of our talented SVES students and grateful to Ms. Maria Claessen, our SVES art teacher, for the inspiration she instills in them.
Thank you, Sabian Shapiro, HWES art teacher, for creating this video highlighting the exhibit during the open house.

Please mark your calendars for the Sunrise Valley Spring Book Fair, which will take place April 13–17. We are excited to welcome students and families for a week of discovering great books and supporting our school library.
Our Book Fair would not be possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers. We are incredibly grateful for the time and support our community provides. A volunteer sign-up will be shared soon, and we hope many of you will consider helping out.
This year we are also working to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags. If you have paper grocery bags at home, we would greatly appreciate donations to the library to help us pack students’ book purchases. Paper bags with handles are especially helpful.
Thank you for supporting the Book Fair and helping us make it a fun and successful event for our students!
FCPS is administering our Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Monday, March 9, to Monday, March 23. Your feedback is critical in helping us to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our schools.
Survey topics include:
- Welcoming environment.
- Communication.
- Student success.
- Advocacy.
- Family and school partnerships.
- Community partnerships.
The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Parents/caregivers will receive a survey link via email from FCPS on March 9. A survey link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available at each school. Please stay tuned for more information.
About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. They are currently reviewing the county’s 2027 Fiscal Year Advertised Budget and are considering possible adjustments before the final county budget is adopted in May. Provide the county with feedback on how you would like your tax dollars spent by completing this survey.
