Dear Columbia friends and families,

We have had another wonderful week of learning and growth here at Columbia Elementary, made even brighter by the welcome spring-like weather earlier in the week!

As a friendly reminder, please note a couple of upcoming schedule changes for next week. We will have a three-hour early release on Wednesday, March 18, with dismissal at 1:05 p.m. Additionally, there will be no school on Friday, March 20.

Thank you for updating your calendars and for your ongoing dedication to our school community. Have a great weekend!

Take care,

Mike Astudillo

📚 Finishing Up Our Exploration of Technology and Society in Language Arts 📚

Students are finishing Benchmark Unit 5 in Language Arts! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about why and how we use technology.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What do you think life would be like if we didn’t have cell phones or the internet?
  • Activity: Ask your child to predict the next big invention in transportation, communication, or entertainment. Have them sketch it, name it, and explain how it works.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

📚 Journeys and Themes in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 6 in Language Arts is about the lessons we can learn from different stories around the world. Students in K-5 will be learning about themes across cultures.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: What’s a lesson that you’ve learned recently, or a challenge you had?
  • Activity: Pick a few of your child’s favorite books or classic stories such as “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” With your child, discuss each story and whether it has a lesson.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

There are over 50 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts, and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. Click on the link below and enter the online order code shown on your child’s order form or search for your child’s artwork by name. Then, have fun shopping!
