What's Happening Mount Eagle

March 6, 2026

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

We are off to a fantastic start with our first week of “Marching Toward Our Future Month!” It has been wonderful to see our students already thinking about their interests, goals, and dreams.

Last Wednesday, students participated in “Dress as Your Favorite Hobby or Interest” Day, and we loved seeing everyone’s passions on display! From athletes and artists to scientists and musicians, our students proudly showcased the activities that bring them joy and help shape who they are.

Next Wednesday, we will celebrate “Rep Your School Day.” Students are encouraged to wear Mount Eagle, Twain, Edison, or college gear as we continue to build excitement about future pathways and school pride.

A special shout-out to our sixth graders, who attended Colonial Days at Mount Vernon. They did an excellent job representing Mount Eagle while learning about the communities that lived there during the colonial period. We are proud of the way they demonstrated curiosity, respect, and engagement throughout the experience.

Thank you for your continued support as we help our students dream big and plan for bright futures!

Warmly,
Kate

Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Read more about these recommendations

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year. Our current absentee

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
