Dear KJMS Families,
A reminder to complete the following survey questions by Monday to help us revise our mission/vision.
We have a couple upcoming events and hope you will join us.
PTA Meeting – March 9 at 7:00 PM - Our March PTA meeting will take place on March 9 at 7:00 PM. We encourage all families to attend, stay informed, and remain engaged in the important work supporting our school community.
Parent Academy – March 18 - On March 18, we will host a Parent Academy focused on student wellness and substance use awareness with Sean McMahon, our Fairfax Pyramid Substance Abuse Specialist. During this session, we will review:
- This school year’s referral numbers
- Trends within the Fairfax Pyramid
- New items and beverages parents should be aware of
- Suggestions and strategies for how to talk with your child about substance use
This will be an informative and practical session designed to equip families with knowledge and tools to support their children.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our KJMS social worker, Maria Marris, as we close National School Social Work Week.
Social workers in FCPS play a vital role in supporting students by helping to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from impacting their ability to perform at their best. We are grateful for Ms. Marris’ dedication, compassion, and commitment to our students and families.
If you have any questions or concerns you can contact our main office at 703-934-2400 or contact me directly at cmsmith@fcps.edu.
Enjoy your weekend!

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.
If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Read more about these recommendations.
Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug, and what they can do to keep themselves and their communities safe.
Share these important facts with your child:
- Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
- More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in
10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
- Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
- Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.

Registration is open or will be available soon for summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

FCPS’ 2026 Special Education Family Conference has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Marshall High School.
The spirit of heritage and the promise of the future filled the air at Carter G. Woodson High School as FCPS held its second annual Black History Month Celebration with the theme, Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence. This year’s event was especially significant as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the movement that became Black History Month.
Students from across the division took center stage as the true "echoes" of this excellence. The program featured student-led Moments of Pride that connected local and national history to contemporary achievements. A spirited keynote speech was delivered by Vernon Walton, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Vienna. Another highlight of the night was the FCPS Black Excellence video tribute.

FCPS is offering take-home meal kits from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, March 19, 2026 to support students who are fasting during the school day.
Thanks to a program from the Virginia Department of Education, students can now take healthy school meal kits home at the end of the day. These kits are designed to be eaten later that day and include both breakfast and lunch.
How to Sign Up:
Families must fill out a meal kit request form on the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) website for each student, every week. Because these meals are prepared fresh, we cannot accept late requests. Please check Important Dates and Forms below for weekly deadlines.
-
Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
-
Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
-
Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.
Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:
-
March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
-
March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026
Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.
Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.
Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins.
Don’t forget to move your clocks
ahead one hour
As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.
