Week 27 Hayfield Secondary Community Newsletter

Dear Hayfield Community -

As we move through the third quarter, students and staff are staying focused on finishing the year strong. Academic advising is wrapping up, and students have been working closely with their counselors to thoughtfully plan their courses for next year. At the same time, classes are beginning to lean into preparation for upcoming SOLs and other state assessments that will take place later this spring. We appreciate the continued support from our families as we encourage students to stay organized, engaged, and confident in their learning as we head toward the final stretch of the school year. Please see our note below that discusses our focus on on-time attendance.

🗨️DiBari's Dispatch

Hey Hawk Family–

It’s been another fantastic week here at Hayfield! There are a lot of great and exciting things going on here. To start with, our middle schoolers have spent the week experiencing finance park. Having a 9th grader myself, I know how important it is to try and give them a perspective about money. I was fortunate enough to join our esteemed JROTC program who was also diligently practicing for their upcoming competitions and they were crushing it. Lastly, as you will see below, we were recognized as a Gold Distinction AP School Honor. There are so many great things going on at Hayfield Secondary School.

I wish you all another fantastic week. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, celebrations, or suggestions at asdibari@fcps.edu.

Go Hawks!

📢Hawk Highlights

Hayfield Earns High Honors on 2025 AP School Honor Roll

We are proud to share that the College Board has named Hayfield Secondary School to the 2025 Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll. This annual recognition highlights schools that foster a strong college-going culture and maximize student readiness for higher education.

Hayfield Secondary School achieved the Gold Distinction, placing it among the top-performing schools in the county for college preparation. To earn this prestigious "Gold" status, Hayfield met rigorous benchmarks for its most recent graduating class:

  • College Culture: 65% or more of the graduating cohort took at least one AP exam during high school.
  • College Credit: 35% or more of the graduating cohort scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam.
  • College Optimization: 10% or more of the graduating cohort took five or more AP exams, including at least one exam in 9th or 10th grade.

About the AP School Honor Roll

Hayfield is one of 17 FCPS high schools recognized this year. The AP program provides students the opportunity to tackle college-level coursework while still in high school, and FCPS supports this by paying the fees for the first six AP exams taken by each student. This initiative ensures our students have every opportunity to earn college credit and build the resilience needed for post-secondary success.

Congratulations to our hardworking students, dedicated teachers, and supportive families for helping Hayfield reach this golden milestone!

All Honors Choir

Congratulations to the following students on their successful audition into the All VA Honor Choir this year. These students placed in the top 6 scores of their voice parts in our district and will be representing our school and District at the All-Virginia Music event in Richmond in April.

Aaden Alexander, 1st Alternate Tenor 1

Word of the Week

This week’s word of the week champ is Eyasu Bekuretsion!  He wrote the winning sentence using the word sanguine.  “Even with the tight deadline, the team remained sanguine about finishing the project on time.”  Great job, Eyasu!

Hayfield Winner: Reflections Entry

Our very own Hawk senior, Nick Lapertosa, has not only earned a Gold Award for Outstanding Interpretation at the county level for his Reflections entry, but he also placed at the state level!  Nick is a 2nd year tutor for our Hawk Writing Center and we are very proud of him.  Special thanks to our PTSA for their continued support with these programs.

Tardies and Attendance

Strong attendance and arriving on time are vital components of your student’s academic success, as the first few minutes of class often set the tone for the entire day's learning. We have noticed an increase of students consistently arriving late to 1st and 2nd periods, which results in missed instructional time and disruptions to the classroom environment. To protect the integrity of our teachers' lessons and ensure every student gets the most out of their education, we will begin monitoring tardy data more closely. Please be aware that students with chronic tardiness will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with school policy.

Kiss and Ride

outdoor sign that says do not drop your student here. please pull forward.

To keep our Kiss and Ride line moving efficiently and safely, we ask that drivers remain in their vehicles and avoid parking within the active drop-off line. If you prefer to park and wait with your student until the doors officially open, please utilize the band parking lot located by the basketball courts to help keep the main thoroughfare clear. For those in the line, please continue pulling forward as space allows, dropping off your student promptly before exiting to maintain a steady flow. Our security team will be on-site directing traffic, so we appreciate your cooperation in following their guidance to ensure a smooth morning transition for all families.
