Dear Panther Family,

Can you feel it? The days are getting longer, the birds are getting louder, and there is a definite buzz of energy in our hallways. March is a pivotal month at Mt Vernon Woods as we balance the excitement of the upcoming spring season with some very important academic milestones.

Our students have worked incredibly hard this year, and we are now entering the "home stretch" as we prepare for upcoming state assessments. To ensure every student feels confident and ready, our teachers are focusing on two key strategies:

  • Spiral Review: Instead of just learning new topics, we are circling back to concepts taught earlier in the year. This "spiral" approach keeps foundational skills fresh and helps students make connections across different subjects.

  • Small Group Practice: We know that every learner is unique. During our designated intervention blocks, teachers are meeting with small groups to provide targeted support, clear up misconceptions, and give students that extra boost they need to shine.

🌟 How You Can Help at Home

  1. Consistent Attendance: Every "spiral review" session counts! Being at school on time helps your child stay in the flow of learning.

  2. Read Daily: Even 15 minutes of reading together each night makes a world of difference in vocabulary and stamina.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education. Let’s make this a fantastic lead-up to the break!

Sincerely,

Ms. O'Neal, Principal

Ms. Berry, Assistant Principal

Mr. Heron, Assistant Principal

Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old.
