Mission Completed: We Earned a Bench

NexTrex

Felix Hoffman and Drake the Dragon are the first to sit on our new NexTrex bench.

Inspired by fifth grader, Felix Hoffmann, the Global and Ethical Citizens at Dranesville Elementary School collected recyclable plastics and earned a bench for our new courtyard. We are thankful to every member of our school community for engaging in this challenge and making a positive environmental difference. Special thanks to the Doerr family, our Get 2 Green Family Ambassadors, for picking up, weighing, and depositing plastic at designated drop-off locations. Congratulations, to Felix, for his leadership and impact. Thank you, Dragons, for collaborating to meet this challenge!

FCPS Students Are Invited to Get2Green’s First Student Action Summit

Join fellow FCPS students in grades K-12 for an evening of learning and connecting about environmental action at schools. The Student Action Summit will take place Thursday, May 14 from 5:30-7pm in the FCPS Welcome Center at 8270 Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, Fairfax, VA. The evening will include:

Student Sharing- an opportunity for students to share their Get2Green/environmental story and learn from one another’s successes.

  • Interested in sharing? Here are some topics to include: What issue are you working to solve? What did you try? Who helped? Presentation options are flexible and may include a tri-fold board, artifacts from your work, or a slidedeck. We encourage students to work as a team to share.
  • Those who choose not to present will have the opportunity to walk around, listen, and connect with those sharing.

Facilitated breakout discussions on environmental issues- talk in small groups about challenges and possible solutions to issues such as Outdoor Learning, Gardening, Zero Waste (reducing waste, food sharing, recycling), and Climate Change.

This event is open to all students in Fairfax County Public Schools. Elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult. Register for the FCPS Get2Green Student Action Summit. A confirmation email with additional details will be sent to all registrants and their families. Questions? Email Get2Green@fcps.edu. Registration closes on May 8, 2026.

Attendance Matters

Day 114

Our students are attending, learning, and growing! This is the season for them to demonstrate their achievement on spring assessments. Thank you for maintaining the habits that nurture daily school attendance, ensuring your child is prepared to learn, grow, and show what they know.

We kindly ask that you refer to the FCPS calendar and, to the greatest extent possible, schedule appointments and vacations during school breaks. Let’s work together to finish the school year strong!

Integrated Reading & Writing Assessment

Thursday, March 12th, fifth graders will complete the 2026 Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW). The IRW is a state assessment that presents students with a nonfiction passage based on science or history content.  This passage is accompanied by six multiple-choice/technology enhanced items and one writing prompt that is based on the passage.  The nonfiction passage provides context for students to use when responding to the prompt, or it may serve as a springboard for students who choose to incorporate personal experiences in their responses. While this is an important academic benchmark, it is also an opportunity for students to showcase the literacy skills they have been building throughout elementary school.
