Bush Hill Odyssey of the Mind Team Places 2nd in Regional Competition
Two teams from Bush Hill made a strong showing at the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition on Saturday, Feb. 28. Odyssey is a creative problem-solving group activity that culminates in a tournament series. In addition to solving a spontaneous problem on the spot, our teams presented solutions to long-term problems that involved writing an original performance, building sets and creating costumes. Congratulations to our team of 3rd and 4th graders, who won 2nd place in their division, just a few points shy of making it to the state tournament! This team competed in the vehicle problem, where they built a train that traveled across the performance space and had three cars attached throughout the 8-minute-long performance. The train and cars could not be touched while moving or attaching cars, so the team made a rope-and-pulley system to propel the train and a rubber-band launcher to attach the cars, which stayed attached to each other with magnets. The team created a funny performance starring a conductor, a villain who tries to stop the train, some sheep, and a wolf who saves the day. Congratulations to Alexandra, Ashley, Kennedy, Marlee, Max and Ruby on their hard work and award-winning performance!

Rooted in Resilience, Echoes of Excellence: FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration
The spirit of heritage and the promise of the future filled the air at Carter G. Woodson High School as FCPS held its second annual Black History Month Celebration with the theme, Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence. This year’s event was especially significant as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the movement that became Black History Month.
Students from across the division took center stage as the true "echoes" of this excellence. The program featured student-led Moments of Pride that connected local and national history to contemporary achievements. A spirited keynote speech was delivered by Vernon Walton, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Vienna. Another highlight of the night was the FCPS Black Excellence video tribute.
