In addition to being newly renovated, Falls Church Academy now has a new wall art instillation featuring students from the Academy Health Care Career classes in action. Come and see the Academy and our students learning hands-on healthcare career skills!
Students in the EMT class are excited to have an ambulance simulator right in their own classroom! This ambulance, created and installed by Simulator Solutions, was paid for by the generous donation of Claude Moore Scholars. This Gold Model edition has lights, suction and airway hook-up, cameras for observation of skills, and hydraulic action to simulate the movement of an ambulance while in transport. An EMT student said "it's the closest to the real thing and moves like the real thing so we can learn what it's like in a stressful situation of caring for a patient in the tight space of a real ambulance."
The side opening of the simulator allows for easy entry into the unit and observation access. Hydraulics under the simulator allow the unit to move as an ambulance might on a ride to the hospital, so students feel what it's like to provide care in a moving vehicle.
Ambulance with Stryker Stretcher allows students to experience taking patients in and out of the ambulance and the tight quarters of providing medical care while in transport.
Students in our Medical Assistant course learn how to draw blood from patients using simulated phlebotomy arms. In addition, they are learning standard phlebotomy order of draw with the various colored tube stoppers.
Falls Church Academy EMT students received the gift of access and training with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Paramedic Interns. From January through March, six EMT students per week assisted as stand-in EMT's, patients and bystanders in the Paramedic Interns training program. Each week lectures on the different topic were provided and training scenarios were conducted; cardiac, respiratory, altered mental status, trauma and OB.
