Principal's Message

Dear KJMS Families,

We held a parent academy workshop focused on social media awareness this past Wednesday.  We explored the popular platforms kids are using today, discussed the potential challenges and benefits, and provided practical tips for fostering healthy online habits. Learn how to have meaningful conversations with your children about their digital lives and how to collaboratively set effective boundaries. See the slides and recording of the workshop. Slides | Recording

I hope you can join us at our next parent academy on Wednesday, March 18th at 7:00pm in the KJMS library.  Sean McMahon, our Fairfax Pyramid Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist, will present information on alcohol, tobacco and drug use trends among teenagers.

Family score reports for middle school winter screening and growth assessments will be centrally distributed to families through SIS ParentVUE (PVUE). Families in grades 6-8 will receive up to three (3) reports based on the assessments their student took this winter: iReady Reading and MAP Math for most MS students, plus VALLSS for identified MS students.

  • MAP & iReady Reports will be posted by Monday, March 2
  • VALLSS Reports will be posted by Monday, March 9

If you have any questions or concerns you can contact our main office at 703-934-2400 or contact me directly at cmsmith@fcps.edu.

Enjoy your weekend!

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

National School Breakfast Week - March 2 - 6, 2026

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

Become Unskippable: Share the Facts About Fentanyl With Teens

Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug, and what they can do to keep themselves and their communities safe.

Share these important facts with your child:

  • Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
  • More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in
10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
  • Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
  • Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.

Learn more about how to have conversations with your child in a way that will make you Become Unskippable.

FCPS Offers Take-Home Meal Kits for Fasting Students

FCPS is offering take-home meal kits from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, March 19, 2026 to support students who are fasting during the school day.

Thanks to a program from the Virginia Department of Education, students can now take healthy school meal kits home at the end of the day. These kits are designed to be eaten later that day and include both breakfast and lunch.

How to Sign Up:

Families must fill out a meal kit request form on the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) website for each student, every week. Because these meals are prepared fresh, we cannot accept late requests. Please check Important Dates and Forms below for weekly deadlines.

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
  • March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.

National School Social Work Week

March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Daylight savings time graphic

Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins.

Don’t forget to move your clocks

ahead one hour

As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.
