March 2-8 is National School Social Work Week. Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Most social workers serve one to two sites. At Coates, we are grateful for our social worker, Mrs. Grady❤️ Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.
This quarter’s Parent Coffee Hour will be focused on helping families navigate the implications to the FCPS Boundary Adjustment. Impacted families will receive communication from the Division, including an opt-in/out form for eligible rising 5th and 6th graders, which will be due on March 13th. It is important to note that per the school board meeting last night, FCPS will not be providing any transportation to elementary students who are opting to remain at their non-base school.
Parents may use the updated Boundary Location Tool linked here on the FCPS website to verify your base school location for the Fall of the 2026-27 school year.
If you need any assistance or would like to discuss any implications of the Boundary Adjustment w/ Mr. Basdekis, please join us in the Coates Cafeteria on Friday, March 6th from 9:15-10:15am. We will also have a virtual opportunity to discuss these implications at the PTA meeting on Thursday, March 12th.

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.
This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.
You are invited to FCPS' Middle School Transition Fair, an evening for families of elementary and middle school students receiving special education services to learn about planning for the future.
At this event, families can meet Career and Transition Services (CTS) representatives and other support staff, learn about postsecondary education, employment, and community supports, and hear from a student and parent panel sharing real transition experiences.
The fair will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Luther Jackson Middle School. Language support will be available.
This is a great opportunity to ask questions, connect with resources, and feel more confident about your child’s next steps. We hope to see you there.
