SOL Testing Dates
Students in grades 3-8 participate in state assessments each year. These assessments measure how students are learning the state standards. Below is the current schedule for the spring Standards of Learning tests at Crossfield Elementary.
Integrated Reading and Writing - Gr 5 -- Monday, March 16
Science - Gr 5 --Tuesday, May 12
Reading - Gr 3 and 4 -- Wednesday, May 13
Reading - Gr 5 and 6 -- Friday, May 15
Math - Gr 3 and 4 -- Monday, May 18
Math - Gr 5 and 6 -- Thursday, May 21
Make-up testing -- Ongoing during the SOL testing window
Retakes for identified students -- May 28 - June 3
Read Across America Spirit Week
 In celebration of National Education Association’s Read Across America week, let’s celebrate the joy of reading!
Additionally, we will be accepting donations of gently used books in the main hallway all week.
Mon, 3/2 - Future Readers & Leaders: Dress as what you want to be when you grow up.
Tues, 3/3 - Read Around the World: Wear clothing that represents a place in the world (college, country, sports team, etc.).
Wed, 3/4 - Reading Jogs the Mind: Wear workout clothes.
Thurs, 3/5 - Words Are Everywhere: Wear a shirt with words on it or tape a vocabulary word to your shirt and be ready to share what it means.
Fri, 3/6 - Cozy Up with a Book: Wear your pajamas and bring a small stuffed animal to read with.
Student Fasting Meal Kits
From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Important Meal Kit Information:
- Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
- Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
- Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
- Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.
Parents or guardians must submit a request form via the FCPS FNS website by the following deadline:

Purple Star Designation
Crossfield is currently working towards earning our Purple Star Designation in conjunction with Dr. Reid’s goal for FCPS to be a Purple Heart Division by 2026-2027. Purple Up! Pop-Up Store
This year, Virginia will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 15th. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military. FCPS Purple Up! T-shirts and other items are available for purchase now through Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Left Behind
If we can find a name in or on an item, we do return items during the school day. With temperatures fluctuating the Left Behind is filling rapidly. Please encourage your child(ren) to look for his/her/their “missing” items.
 Exploding Kittens game is back in the LB, it has visited the LB several times this year. Books that have been waiting for quite some time, Science, Pokémon Adventures, Disney Princess Pop-up, and Investigators, will be donated to Crossfield’s Gently-used Book Donation effort on Friday, March 6th. As in the past, items remaining at the end of the quarter (March 27th) will be donated to The Closet in Herndon.

Registration Closes FRIDAY for the Crossfield vs. Navy Basketball Player/Dance Squad!
Registration deadline ends this week for all 6th grade basketball players (boys/girls) and 5th/6th grade dance squad members to represent Team Crossfield at the Crossfield vs. Navy basketball game is Friday, April 24 at Chantilly HS.
**Registration deadline is FRIDAY, MARCH 6 to participate: Sign Up HERE. **
Participants will need to attend at least 50% practices to be eligible to participate. All practices kickoff NEXT WEEK and will be held at Crossfield after school:
Boys basketball practice: TUESDAYS from 4:00-5:15pm in the GYM, starting March 10 - April 21. No practice March 31 during Spring Break.
Girls basketball practice: THURSDAYS from 4:00-5:15pm in the GYM, starting March 12 - April 21. No practice April 2 during Spring Break.
Dance Squad practice: TUESDAYS from 4:00-5:15pm in the CAFETERIA, starting March 10 - April 21. No practice March 31 during Spring Break.

Why Smart Kids Struggle

Many students struggle not because of ability, but because of executive function. This session, presented by The StudyPro, helps parents recognize these challenges and learn simple strategies to reduce overwhelm and help kids get unstuck—without nagging or doing it for them.
