Roadrunner Rundown
February 24, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
We shared yesterday: The Town of Vienna has begun work at the intersection of Nutley St SW and Marshall Rd SW which will affect our arrival and dismissal-more info can be found on the Town of Vienna website. Lane closures across Nutley St SW are anticipated to cause traffic delays over the next year from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. If you walk down Nutley to MRES, you will gradually need to come in through the neighborhood. DO NOT attempt to turn left to exit K&R. FCPS Transportation may adjust bus routes if this impacts on-time arrival to school or home.
STEAM night this Thursday evening, 5:30-7:30 pm. This evening provides opportunities to do hands-on experiments and to view student projects. Come for a short visit or for the entire two hours.
Have a great week.
Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

School Events and Information
All Around Learning Every Day
Students learn academics and non-subject lessons and interact with friends and peers in school which builds up a strong sense of self (especially in elementary school). Missing school interferes with these important learning opportunities that prepare students for middle and high school and beyond. Attendance is important!
Drop Off for Morning Enrichment Classes
If you are walking your child into the building for a morning enrichment class, please do not park in front of the school and leave your vehicle unattended. Please park in the lot by Kiss & Ride and then walk your child in. The front bus lane is only to be used for drop off of students for enrichment classes. Thank you.
Spring Picture Day
Victor O'Neill will be taking Spring Pictures on Tuesday, March 3. Class and individual portraits will be taken. Parents will be able to view and order photos in their online gallery approximately ten days after picture day. If you have any questions leading up to picture day, please reach out to Victor O’Neill Studios by emailing Underclass@vosphoto.com. All ordering is done online at https://www.vosphoto.com.
Social and Emotional Learning Screening
FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring.
Marshall Road has scheduled the administration of the Spring SEL Screener for the week of March 9-13. Opt-outs forms available at The Parent Digital Consent System. Questions? Please reach out to Meg Gillespie, mmgillespie@fcps.edu, (703) 937-1558.

Family Reading Night - NEXT Wednesday, March 4 - 5:30–7:30 PM
Join us for an evening of reading fun featuring Megan Wagner Lloyd, bestselling author of Allergic and Squished, plus storytime with special guests (including your principal and teachers). The Fairfax Public Library will be there to help students sign up for their very own library cards, and the Book Fair will be open too! Come dressed as your favorite book character and receive a surprise!
The Book Fair is Coming NEXT WEEK - Tuesday, March 3 - Thursday, March 5!
Our favorite bookstore returns! Help make the Book Fair magic by volunteering. Click here to volunteer! Make shopping easy for your Roadrunner! Browse the Book Fair site (click here) and set up an eWallet - a cash-free way for students to shop. You can set a maximum amount and your card is only charged for what your student spends. If they don’t end up buying anything at the Book Fair, the credit card is not charged and funds do not carry over to the next school year.
When to shop? For before school access, you can accompany your student to the book fair starting at 8:45 am (Tuesday -Thursday). Each class will visit the Book Fair during the school day! And don't forget to shop during Family Reading Night--the store will stay open until 7:30 pm on Wednesday.

Our first annual MRES Read-A-Thon runs for two weeks, and we have some amazing incentives lined up for everyone!

The lucky winner gets to choose from awesome experiences, including having lunch with 3 friends and a specialist, helping Mrs. Hoffman pick a new book for the library that will have their name in the dedication, and more!
-
Class Prize (Top Fundraisers): The class that raises the most money gets to choose their ultimate reward: (1) Writing a message on the school marquee, (2) A 1-hour class photo booth, or (3) An ice cream party!

MRES Staff Spotlight
Big cheers for Ms. Magnetti, our amazing 2nd grade resource teacher, who snagged the PTA Priority Parking Spot this week!
Ms. Magnetti has been a Marshall Road parent since 2017! Her son is now in 8th grade at Thoreau. She began working at MRES in 2019.
When asked what she loves about MRES, Ms. Magnetti said, “It's hard to have just one favorite thing about MRES....I love the friends I have made in the building. I also love when my former students come to visit me and tell me what is happening in their lives. I love to work at door 3 for arrival and dismissal!”
When Ms. Magnetti is not at school, you can probably find her at Orangetheory, her “home away from home”! She also loves to read and do needlepoint, especially at VAC in the summer months.
Fun Fact: Ms. Magnetti is from Mamaroneck, New York, the same town as Mrs. G, our guidance counselor! She has also lived in Telluride, CO and Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
Hooray for Ms. Magnetti and everything she brings to our community!

Student Fasting Meal Kits
From February 18 to March 19, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Important Meal Kit Information:
- Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
- Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
- Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
- Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.
Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:
- February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
- March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
- March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026
Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.
Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast
Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers. This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback. Want to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.
