Women's History Month

Women's History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Read more about Women’s History Month in National Geographic Kids.

Daylight Saving Begins (Spring Forward)

Daylight savings time graphic

Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Celebrating Arts in Our Schools

Arts in Our Schools

The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month. Youth Art Month encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety. The program provides a medium for recognizing skills developed through visual arts experiences unlike any other curriculum subjects, including: problem solving, creativity, observation, and communication.

Read Across America: March 2 - 6

Read Across America - Final

We are excited to celebrate Read Across America Week with our special theme: “Let’s ‘Paws’ to Read!” 🐾📚 from March 2nd – March 6th!  Throughout the week, students will enjoy fun reading activities while building a love of books.

To help make our celebration even more meaningful, we are partnering with the Fairfax County Animal Shelter to collect supplies for pets in need. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show kindness and care for animals in our community.

We are collecting the following items: • Dog and cat food (dry or canned) • Dog and cat treats • Cat litter • Pee pads

Donations may be sent in with your child any day during Read Across America Week (March 2nd – March 6th) . Collection boxes will be located in the main lobby.

Thank you for helping our students learn that reading opens hearts and minds—and that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference!

Monday: Fetch a Book and Set a Reading Goal!  Challenge yourself!  “I want to read for __ minutes every day.”

Tuesday: Read with Your Pet! Bring in a picture of you and your pet reading together, or draw a picture of you and your favorite animal reading!  We will put it up in the hallway to share!

Wednesday: Pet-Themed Bookmark Day!: You get to design your own bookmark!  Can you think of a catchy slogan?  “Sit. Stay. Read.” We can’t wait to see your creativity! You can take your bookmark home, or we will display them for all to see!

Thursday: Show your wild side and wear Animal themed clothing!

Friday: Paws and PJs Day!  Bring a stuffed animal and wear your PJs to school!

Spring and Class Pictures: March 3

Spring Picture Day Banner 2026

What to expect on picture day

  1. All students will be photographed on March 3. There will not be retakes.
  2. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can either be printed or texted to the student and brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  3. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  4. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  5. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

All proof packages offer parents a second opportunity to order prints. All orders are subject to shipping and handling costs of up to $8.50 and will be shipped directly to home.

Career Day: March 27 👩‍⚕️👨‍🚒

On Friday March 27, 2026 Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts & Sciences is hosting our annual Career Day extravaganza.  Our goal is to expand students' knowledge about the variety of career possibilities the future holds for them. By expanding their knowledge of different careers, we hope students will be motivated to connect what they are learning in school to their dreams and aspirations for their future.  We invite parents, relatives, friends, and other community members from all career fields to share their experiences with our students.

If you are interested in sharing your career experiences, please complete this form (Career Day Information Form) no later than Friday, March 6, 2026.  After March 6th presenters will be contacted by email by one of our school counselors who will provide you with additional information and answer any questions you may have about your participation in the event.  Please note, March 27th is a two hour early dismissal day and as result career day will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Should you have any additional questions, please direct them to either of our school counselors, Stephanie Schauder (sschauder@fcps.edu) or Garry Carter (glcarter@fcps.edu).

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

National School Breakfast Week

Multiple studies show that school breakfast is important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Also, students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
