Students gathered Friday to celebrate exceeding the school-wide goal of reading and logging 3,000 books.
Celebrating Our Community of Readers
We are thrilled to share the incredible progress our students are making through our school-wide reading challenge! What began as a simple goal has blossomed into a vibrant community of readers. As we work toward our strategic goal of ensuring every student is reading on grade level by Grade 3, your support at home is critical to student success.
By reading at home, students gain:
-
Practice: An opportunity to practice the phonics and comprehension skills taught in the classroom.
-
Perspective: A chance to dive into new worlds, learn facts, and explore diverse perspectives.
-
Pleasure: A lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.
We believe that growth should be celebrated! To keep the momentum going, we are continuing our reading challenge. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we will hold a raffle for a special token. To enter, students simply need to submit their reading logs (either online or paper. These tokens can be redeemed for a brand-new book from our school's book vending machine.
All students who read and log 7 or more books between February 20th and June 5th will receive an invitation to our Glow Party! Thank you for your partnership and support in helping our students to shine bright as readers.

Understanding the Connection Between Daily Instruction and the VDOE School Performance Support Framework for Elementary School
 |
|
Teachers at Dranesville Elementary School provide daily instruction that prioritizes students meeting or exceeding grade level benchmarks. Teachers use approved FCPS curriculum that aligns with the VDOE Standards of Learning for all students kindergarten through sixth grade. Students are assessed informally and formally to ensure that they are learning and to adjust instruction. VDOE reports school performance based on formal assessments administered each Spring. |
Students in grades 3 through 6 will be taking the Spring Standards of Learning assessments in Reading and Math. Students in grade 5 will also take a Standards of Learning assessment in Science. These assessments reflect the teaching and learning that is happening in our classrooms every day. Our teachers provide instruction on both content as well as the different ways that students are expected to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills including: performance based assessments, writing assessments, and on multiple choice assessments. Multilingual Learners are also required to meet state expected progress on the annual WIDA assessment.
 |
|
Mastery incorporates all student Standards of Learning test results. It awards additional credit for students who reach advanced levels and partial credit for students who do not yet meet grade-level standards. Mastery is measured by Standards of Learning assessments.
Growth uses a student’s past performance on Virginia SOL tests to measure how they are expected to learn from the start of the school year to the end. The metric then compares expected learning to actual learning at the end of the year. Growth is measured by Standards of Learning and WIDA assessments.
Readiness considers chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing ten percent or more of the academic year for any reason, including excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions.

Thank you for your continued partnership in prioritizing daily, on-time attendance. Every day your student is in class, they are engaging in vital grade-level instruction, targeted interventions, and enrichment activities that fuel their growth and achievement.
Spring approaching is a sign of sports season and travel plans. It is also an important season of maintaining the routines that help our students succeed. Consistency is key to ensuring students are prepared for upcoming instruction and spring assessments.
We kindly ask that you refer to the FCPS calendar and, to the greatest extent possible, schedule appointments and vacations during school breaks. Let’s work together to finish the school year strong and successful---together!
