Woodson Weekly is published every Monday to provide the community with important information about school life at Woodson High School.
Vision Statement
Carter G. Woodson High School is a community that embraces diversity in a culture of improvement and success that promotes academic curiosity and individual mental and physical growth.
Message from Mr. Greata
This week at Woodson is filled with congratulations and incredible accomplishments across every corner of our community. We begin by celebrating Joelle Rice, who earned 2nd place at the first-ever FCPS "Seize the Moment" Student AI Challenge. Joelle developed a sophisticated program using AI to access protein databases, providing patients with prevention protocols based on their individual likelihood of developing pediatric cancer. This project received special recognition for its complexity and real-world application, and we extend a huge thank you to Travis Pugh for his dedicated help and coaching.
Our athletic programs continue to reach new heights as well. Barrett Pullen, our star shot putter, was recently featured as the News 7 Athlete of the Week, highlighting his impressive journey from curiosity to state title contender. In the pool, Lyla Devlin delivered a historic performance at the State Swim Meet, breaking the school record in the 200-meter individual medley and placing 3rd in the state overall.
The excellence continued in the courtroom and on the stage. Twenty-four dedicated students from our Crimson and Navy Mock Trial teams, led by sponsors Kevin Wright and Mike Viccora, showcased incredible tenacity at the Northern Virginia Regional Mock Trial Competition. Facing forty elite teams, both Woodson squads finished in the top 16. While they narrowly missed a state bid by a single ballot, several students were singled out as "Top Lawyers" or "Top Witnesses." We are incredibly proud of how these students balanced grueling academic loads and college applications to master complex legal procedures with such poise.
Crimson Team: Connor Breen, Spencer Rushing, Stella Milam, Parnika Urs, Nadia Langer, Arya Desai, Erik Mai, Riley Saunders, Matthew Cohoon, Lily Eng, Cami Jo, Rekha Thirumlai.
Navy Team: Addi Johnson, Brandon Hanford, Mahita Vunnava, Kevin Nguyen, Jamie Yoon, Tommy Spencer, Gaga So, Gigi McKeever, Maya Lawrence, Jasper Eng, Annie Bahn, Tyler Rene.
In the arts, our One-Act, A Piece of My Heart, won the Regional Championship and will be moving on to the State competition on March 7th!
We invite the entire community to the FCPS Black History Month celebration this Wednesday, the 25th, at 6:00 PM. Here at Carter G. Woodson, our Black Student Union has been a model for the recognition of our history, leading us through daily announcements, community panels, and our annual staff luncheon. We want to thank sponsors Darlene Sheppard and Shameka Brantley, along with student leaders: Nate Hamilton, Yemmy Tekabe, Lorraine Noble, Elijah Wickham, Miles Springer, Stephanie Luna, Sarea Manson, Fati Dia, Carter Pilson, Kiera Thompson, Jayden Nicholson, Natalia Nicholson, Fairouz Ghorab, Nifemi Akinkunmi, Olutunmike Akintunde, and Lincoln Williams. We also want to thank Congressman Walkinshaw’s office for their help in presenting a very powerful panel of community leaders for our students!
Finally, please come out and cheer on our basketball teams as they compete in the regional tournament this week. Both games will be held right here at Woodson at 7:00 PM: our Girls team takes on Lewis HS this Tuesday, and our Boys team faces Hayfield on Wednesday.
Have a great week!

FCPS Offers Take-Home Meal Kits for Fasting Students
FCPS is offering take-home meal kits from Wednesday, February 18 to Thursday, March 19, 2026 to support students who are fasting during the school day.
Thanks to a program from the Virginia Department of Education, students can now take healthy school meal kits home at the end of the day. These kits are designed to be eaten later that day and include both breakfast and lunch.
Families must fill out a meal kit request form on the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) website for each student, every week. Because these meals are prepared fresh, we cannot accept late requests.
Submit a fasting meal kit request form by these deadlines:
- By Wednesday, February 11, 2026 for the week of February 18, 2026
- By Monday, February 16, 2026 for the week of February 23, 2026
- By Monday, February 23, 2026 for the week of March 2, 2026
- By Monday, March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
- By Monday, March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Counselor Corner
Counselors completed Academic Advising with rising seniors over the last two weeks and are now seeing rising juniors. The course selection forms and other helpful and important information can be found on our Academic Advising padlet. We love seeing our students and are excited to continue our Advising meetings through March 16. Please be aware that we are away from email much of the day during this time and will respond as soon as possible.
During our meetings, we are directing students to grade level padlets (Junior, Sophomore, Freshman) for college & career planning resources. A valuable resource for rising seniors is our Next Steps document which guides students to take the needed steps to reach their goals, no matter their post-secondary plans, whether it be college, technical school, military or workforce. College-bound students can download the Application Tracker to start organizing their colleges list and application components. Remember to enter admissions risk per college so you have a balanced list.
Speaking of seniors, all senior transcripts and mid-year reports were uploaded and submitted to colleges. If you are concerned about your transcript status, please contact your intended college(s) directly. Thank you!
Academic Advising Updates
Last week, school counselors began holding individual meetings with 11th graders for them to select classes for next year. Counselors will continue to meet with juniors through history classes until February 18th. Counselors will then meet with 10th graders through English classes between February 18th and March 2nd, and then with 9th graders through science classes between March 3rd and March 16th. If your child is absent on the day of their scheduled meeting with their counselor, their counselor will schedule another time to meet with them in the coming days. Every student will be seen and will have the opportunity to select classes for next year.
During this time, we encourage parents at home to review their child’s planned course selections with them. There is a wealth of information available on the Woodson HS Academic Advising website, as well as the Student Services Academic Advising Padlet. Counselors have spoken with students about making informed decisions when it comes to selecting classes for next year, so please utilize the information on these sites to get informed so that your child can make the best course selections for themselves for next school year.
After counselors complete seeing students in each grade level, the Student Services office will send individual emails to parents with a list of their child’s course selections for review. This information can also be in found in both SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE under the Course Selections tab. Please be sure to review your child’s course selections for next year after they meet with their counselor. Any course request change must be submitted to your child’s school counselor by Friday, March 27th. Please know that changes will be accommodated on a space available basis and change requests are not guaranteed.
Thank you for your support and partnership during academic advising!
