RAVEN REPORT
We started out this week with WIDA and everyone did a great job. Our students shared that they took it seriously and did their best and were so encouraged by your notes to them. Thank you so much for supporting them during this time. We also celebrated the success of our students with the Honor Roll ceremony in the cafeteria. They were so excited to celebrate their academic success. I also had opportunities to be in lots of classrooms this week and it was great to see so much student academic talk and collaboration. I know many of our teachers are working on high-leverage moves around these practices (and others!) and we love seeing these moves in action. I hope you all enjoyed this long weekend and see you on Wednesday!

Raving Ravens |
Semester 2 is starting off strong! Our kids love having new classes and new teachers and here’s one example of creating a safe learning environment. Ms. Kinsey welcomed her new students with some fun collaborative activities to both build relationships but also to build routines for collaboration. Relationships and support in action!
FRED Cards: Here’s what people are saying about our amazing staff. Below are some of the highlights from the recent FRED Cards that were submitted. The person’s name is who is being highlighted followed by what was said about them by a colleague. I will continue to highlight them in each Raven Report so keep them coming!
-
Cafeteria Staff: “Thank you for all your hard work! From breakfast to second chance to lunch. You all serve our students with compassion and grace. Never asking for "Please " or "Thank you" always serving with a smile we all are very grateful for what you do to help the kids thrive! Your work does not go unnoticed! Thank you!”
-
Phoebe Gray: “Thank you for always taking the CT notes. Your contributions and scaffolds for students to use are greatly appreciated. “

Important Information |
WIDA Testing Schedule: Students who are participating in WIDA testing will be testing on 2/19, and 2/20. On those days we will run a 2-hour delay schedule but without an actual delay. This will allow students who are testing in the morning an opportunity to test without missing any instruction. Students who are not testing will report to another location and have an opportunity to make up work, extension activities, or independent activities. If you have any questions please reach out to Elizabeth Edwards for any questions.
Students Fasting at Poe: Students who are fasting at Poe this year may stay in the library during lunch time. They can arrange to get a pass from the librarian before school or they can get a pass in the cafeteria at lunch time. The librarian asks that students use the restroom prior to coming to the library, if possible.
Meal Kits for Fasting Students: From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:
- Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
- Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
- Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.
Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.
Student Experience Survey 2/23: I want to share with you that Poe Middle School will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey in late February/early March. This survey will help the school division gather valuable feedback from students and improve the overall school experience. It aligns with the Strategic Plan’s equity commitments, which include a focus on elevating student voice and experiences. Our school will administer the survey on February 23 during advisory . All students, except those who have been opted out, will receive the survey link. If you would like your child to opt-out of this survey, please email Tyler Miller at tmiller@fcps.edu.
Black History Month-Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence: Families and community members are invited to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and uplift the voices shaping our future at FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration. Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence will take place on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School.
The event will honor the rich history, strength, and contributions of the Black community through inspiring student performances and a powerful keynote address by Rev. Vernon C. Walton, pastor of First Baptist Church of Vienna. Light refreshments will be available.
Survey on Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Now Open for All Families and Middle and High School Students: On Monday, all FCPS parents/caregivers and middle and high school students received an email to participate in a voluntary and confidential survey. (Please check your spam folder if you have not received it.) Questions refer to proposed changes to FCPS’ SR&R document for next year. This document outlines the rules that students are expected to follow, and guidelines for consequences if those expectations are not met. Possible changes include:
-
Universal Discipline: Charts will list consequences and supports for students. They will help ensure that two students of the same grade will be treated fairly and receive the same level of support.
-
Standards for In-School Suspensions of Students with Disabilities:Creating standards for how in-school suspensions are handled for students who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan.
-
Accommodations for Multilingual Learner Student Statements:Providing translation accommodations when Multilingual Learner students provide statements about disciplinary incidents.
Warm Up FCPS – Divisionwide Spirit Day: Tired of all the cold weather? Let’s warm up with a little school spirit across the division!
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid is encouraging all FCPS students, teachers, and staff to shake the wrinkles out of their brightest outfits and tropical wear to help brighten everyone’s moods on Thursday, February 19.
Planning for Life in and After High School for Students with IEPs: Families, caregivers, and educators of elementary and middle school students receiving special education services are invited to join Career and Transition Services (CTS) to learn about planning for life in and after high school.
The transition fair will take place on Wednesday, March 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Luther Jackson Middle School.
Ensuring the success of our students with disabilities after high school is dependent on what is known as transition planning. Please join CTS and other support service personnel for an evening focused on planning for the future.
An exhibitor fair will include teachers and representatives from CTS high school courses, career academies, age 18-22 programs, and transition services for students with disabilities. This event also includes a presentation with a brief overview of transition services and a student/parent panel sharing firsthand experiences. Register in advance.
