Learn About Kindergarten at Woodley Hills Elementary
Our kindergarten orientation is being held on March 25 to give students entering school in August an opportunity to learn more about kindergarten at our school.
We recognize that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.
There’s also an easy-to-follow five-step process outlined for registering your child for kindergarten. Register your child today! Contact our registrar Sandra Guzman, at 703-799-2001, or by e-mail at sguzman@fcps.edu with any questions or to initiate enrollment.

Social and Emotional Learning
Next week we are joining the statewide celebration of Virginia Kindness Week! Please be sure to look at the Kindness Week spirit days flyer!
March 2 is SEL Day! At school, students will have the opportunity for some discussion around Social Emotional Learning (SEL) with book characters.
The Virginia Department of Education defines social emotional learning as:
“The process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”
SEL is made up of five areas of knowledge and skill: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.
This week the focus is on self-awareness. Self-awareness includes recognizing feelings, thoughts, preferences, and strengths including how our actions affect us and others. Encourage self-awareness at home by having a conversation with your student about their strengths. Consider sharing some of your strengths now and when you were a student.
Kindness and Spirit Week
We are excited to celebrate Virginia Kindness Week and Random Acts of Kindness Day over the next two weeks!
We will be celebrating with a Spirit Week 2/23-2/27:

2/24: Mismatch Day to Celebrate our Differences - Wear mismatch clothes, socks, or patterns
2/25: Team Up for Kindness - Wear sports or college gear
2/26: Color the World with Kindness - Wear tie dye or rainbow colors
2/27: We Dream of Kindness - Pajama day

Calling All Career Day Volunteers!
Our annual Career Day is coming up on March 4, and we need your help to make it an inspiring experience for our students! Career Day gives our elementary students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of careers, ask questions, and begin imagining the many possibilities for their future.
If you or someone you know would like to share about their career, please consider volunteering and sharing the Career Day flyer with friends, family members, or community connections. We currently have 6 presenters signed up, and our goal is to reach at least 21 presenters so students can learn about many different career paths.
Students are curious about all kinds of careers. Some examples of careers students enjoy learning about include (but are not limited to):
- Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
- Teachers, principals, and school staff
- Police officers, firefighters, and EMTs
- Engineers and architects
- Scientists and environmental workers
- Artists, musicians, and performers
- Chefs and bakers
- Military service members (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard)
- Veterinarians and animal care workers
- Athletes and coaches
- Technology and computer-related careers
- Entrepreneurs and business owners
- Construction workers and skilled trades
Thank you for helping us show our students the many paths their futures can take! If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gibbs or Ms. Thompson.

New Visitor Management System
New Visitor Management System
We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.
For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.
But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.
If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!
Spirit wear is here!
