What's Happening Mount Eagle

January 13, 2026

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

We are celebrating a full week of school with no weather delays—what a wonderful way to keep our learning momentum strong! It has been a great week of engagement and focus across our classrooms.

This week, students are beginning their fifth Language Arts unit, with a focus on technology. You may hear your child share about reading informational texts on topics such as robots, drones, and cell phones, or writing opinion pieces about how technology should be used in our daily lives. We are excited to see our students think critically about the role technology plays in our world.

Please note a few important dates for next week:

  • Monday, February 16Presidents’ Day Holiday: Schools and offices will be closed.

  • Tuesday, February 17 – Teacher Workday: No school for students; the office will be open.

  • Wednesday, February 18 – Early Release Wednesday: Students will dismiss at 12:30 PM.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We look forward to another strong week ahead!

Warmly,
Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

Call for Supplies in the Library!

Next week students in some Grade 4-6 classes will start a Library STEAM Lesson.  Ms. Toohey, our new long-term library substitute teacher, is in need of cardboard toilet paper and paper towel tubes.

Please bring any extra tubes to the library at arrival or send them in with your children next week.

Winter Family Score Reports for ES Screening/Growth Assessments

Family score reports for elementary winter screening and growth assessments will be centrally distributed to families through SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) Documents. Families in grades PreK-6 will receive up to three (3) reports based on the assessments their student took this winter:

Grades 3-6 Student Experience Survey

Parents and guardians of students in grades 3-6 were previously notified that our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23.

The deadline to opt out is Friday, February 13.The survey will automatically be sent unless parents/guardians opt out by this date.

The electronic opt-out form can be accessed at this link.

Meal Kits for Fasting Students

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage

Our Student Information Assistant, Ms. Sara Merino Paz, is available to answer your questions. Reach her by calling Mount Eagle at 703-721.2100 or emailing srmerinopaz@fcps.edu.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year. Our current absentee

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
