Learn About Kindergarten at Woodley Hills Elementary

Our kindergarten orientation is being held on March 25 to give students entering school in August an opportunity to learn more about kindergarten at our school.

We recognize that parents are their children’s first teachers. Resources on the School Readiness and Transition to Kindergarten webpage provide parents with ways to support their children to help ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten.

There’s also an easy-to-follow five-step process outlined for registering your child for kindergarten. Register your child today! Contact our registrar Sandra Guzman, at 703-799-2001, or by e-mail at sguzman@fcps.edu with any questions or to initiate enrollment.

Social and Emotional Learning

As you know, we support districtwide initiatives to promote SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) at Woodley Hills Elementary.  As shared on the SEL in FCPS website, “Families are children’s first teachers and essential to promoting social and emotional learning (SEL) throughout a child’s life.  When educators and families work together, they can build strong connections with each other that reinforce social and emotional skills developed in the home, in schools, and in their communities.”

Next week we are joining the statewide celebration of Virginia Kindness Week!  We are teaching students that kindness is a skill we build through practice, and we’d love for you to join the conversation at home!  Try asking one or both questions during dinner, in the car, or before going to bed next week to keep the spirit of Kindness Week going!

  • “What was the kindest thing you saw someone do today?  It could be something big, or something really small.”
  • “Is it hard to be kind to someone when you are feeling grumpy or tired?  What helps you stay kind even when it’s tough?”

Thank you for helping us spread positivity!  You are welcome to share back some of the responses you heard at home.

Kindness and Spirit Week

We are excited to celebrate Virginia Kindness Week and Random Acts of Kindness Day over the next two weeks!

We will be celebrating with a Spirit Week 2/23-2/27:

2/23: Kindness Makes the Heart Grow - Wear red or pink

2/24: Mismatch Day to Celebrate our Differences - Wear mismatch clothes, socks, or patterns

2/25: Team Up for Kindness - Wear sports or college gear

2/26: Color the World with Kindness - Wear tie dye or rainbow colors

2/27: We Dream of Kindness - Pajama day

Calling All Career Day Volunteers!

Our annual Career Day is coming up on March 4, and we need your help to make it an inspiring experience for our students! Career Day gives our elementary students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of careers, ask questions, and begin imagining the many possibilities for their future.

If you or someone you know would like to share about their career, please consider volunteering and sharing the Career Day flyer with friends, family members, or community connections. We currently have 6 presenters signed up, and our goal is to reach at least 21 presenters so students can learn about many different career paths.

Students are curious about all kinds of careers. Some examples of careers students enjoy learning about include (but are not limited to):

  • Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
  • Teachers, principals, and school staff
  • Police officers, firefighters, and EMTs
  • Engineers and architects
  • Scientists and environmental workers
  • Artists, musicians, and performers
  • Chefs and bakers
  • Military service members (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard)
  • Veterinarians and animal care workers
  • Athletes and coaches
  • Technology and computer-related careers
  • Entrepreneurs and business owners
  • Construction workers and skilled trades

Thank you for helping us show our students the many paths their futures can take! If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gibbs or Ms. Thompson.

Planning for Life in and After High School for Students with IEPs

Families, caregivers, and educators of elementary and middle school students receiving special education services are invited to join Career and Transition Services (CTS) to learn about planning for life in and after high school.

The transition fair will take place on Wednesday, March 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Luther Jackson Middle School.

Ensuring the success of our students with disabilities after high school is dependent on what is known as transition planning. Please join CTS and other support service personnel for an evening focused on planning for the future.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, connect with resources, and feel more confident about your child’s next steps. We hope to see you there!. Register in advance

LMVSC Spring Sports

LMVSC is deeply rooted in the neighborhoods we serve. Our programs are designed to keep children playing close to their school and community, helping strengthen local connections while supporting both physical and mental well-being through sports. We also proudly offer financial assistance and never turn away a player based on their family’s ability to pay.
