Notes from the Nest

From the Principals’ Desk

What a joyful week at SEES! 🎉

We had so much fun celebrating the 100th Day of School, marking an important milestone in our learning journey. From creative projects to classroom activities centered around the number 100, our students showed excitement, curiosity, and pride in how much they’ve grown this year. It’s hard to believe we’re already 100 days into such a wonderful school year!

We also had a fantastic turnout for Heart Bingo on Thursday evening. Thank you to our PTA and volunteers for organizing such a fun and engaging event for our families. It was wonderful to see students and families laughing, connecting, and enjoying time together as a school community.

Moments like these remind us how special SEES truly is—when learning and community come together, our Eagles soar.

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

ST Math Success

🦅 SOAR Shout-Outs

ST Math Progress

During the second quarter alone, our students solved 320,853 puzzles. That brings our total for the school year so far to 606,556 puzzles — and we are well on our way to surpassing one million puzzles solved this year.

Out of 565 students, 445 students met the goal of solving 500 puzzles, which means 79% of our students reached the second quarter challenge goal.

Six classes — Aburish, August, Bognar, Staples, Taylor, and Wines — had 100% of their students meet the goal. In addition, Fagan and Malachowski had 96% of students reach the goal, and Kumar and Sadaf were close behind at 95%.

For the first time ever, an entire grade level met the goal — third grade achieved 100% participation. This is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to both teacher dedication and student perseverance.

What’s happened in Third Grade Reading this week?

3rd grade reading

Third Grade Unit 5 Essential Question

What is the value of innovation?

In this unit, students read biographies of inventors and learn how their innovations and inventions solve real-world problems. They also read informational texts about communication technologies from the past and today. As they synthesize what they learn across texts, students explore the value of innovation and develop these key understandings: inventions are created to solve problems; technology shapes how we live, work, communicate, play, and learn; inventors build on the ideas of those who came before them; and technology helps connect people and cultures.

What’s happened in Fourth Grade Math this week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence -  Student Centered Engagement

Fourth Grade Focus for This Week:

4th grade math

Our fourth graders have been busy diving into the world of decimals! They are building a strong understanding of decimals through the thousandths place and have learned to read, write, compare, and order decimals using models and visual tools to truly make sense of the numbers.

Now, our fourth graders are soaring even higher as they explore estimation and practice adding and subtracting decimals to solve real-world problems. Their confidence and problem-solving skills continue to grow as they apply what they’ve learned in meaningful ways!

Home Connection:Look for decimals in everyday life! Ask your student to estimate totals while shopping, explain how they solved a problem, or notice decimals in money, measurements, and recipes. It’s a fun way to help their math skills soar!

📚 Exploring Technology and Society in Language Arts 📚

Benchmark Unit 5 in Language Arts is about technology and how it can help us solve problems at home, school, and work. Students in K-5 will be learning about technology and society. Grade six students will learn about technology in the 21st century.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: If you could invent anything, what would it be?
  • Activity: Talk to your child about what daily life was like before today’s advances in technology. Where would you go to find information? How did you stay in touch with friends and family? Ask your child if they think they would like living without modern technology.

At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Celebrating Black History Month

Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence

Families and community members are invited to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and uplift the voices shaping our future at FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration. Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence will take place on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School

The event will honor the rich history, strength, and contributions of the Black community through inspiring student performances and a powerful keynote address by Rev. Vernon C. Walton, pastor of First Baptist Church of Vienna. Light refreshments will be available.

Celebrating Black Excellence – Student Spotlight Opportunity

As part of our Black History Month celebrations, we are excited to highlight and celebrate Black Excellence within our school community through a student bulletin board display. Black Excellence honors the achievements, contributions, leadership, creativity, and positive impact of Black individuals both past and present.

Students are invited to participate by completing a reflection about a Black individual who inspires them. This may include sharing who the person is, why they are inspiring, contributions or accomplishments they have made, and how they motivate students to make a positive impact in their own lives. Student submissions will also include an illustration or symbol representing their chosen individual and will be displayed on our Black Excellence bulletin board as we celebrate the many ways Black individuals have shaped our world and continue to inspire future generations.

Reflection paper for students who would like to participate will be available. Thank you for helping us celebrate and uplift the voices and experiences that strengthen our community.

Warm Up FCPS – Divisionwide Spirit Day

Tired of all the cold weather? Let’s warm up with a little school spirit across the division!

Ramadan Begins February 18; Fasting Accommodation Available

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islam. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Wednesday, February 18, which is an O day in FCPS. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Will Your Child Be Fasting During Ramadan?

We recognize that many in the Lane community will be observing Ramadan, and parents may wish to have their children offered accommodations during lunch time if they are fasting. If your child will be fasting, please let us know by filling out this form. This will help us provide the space and supervision for these students. If you have questions, please contact our family liaison,Lili Burga, at lburgamoncad@fcps.edu.
