President's Day

President's Day graphic

Presidents Day, officially recognized in the United States, is celebrated on the third Monday in February each year. It is a time to honor and remember the birthdays and achievements of the country's most distinguished leaders, and to reflect on the president's role in shaping the nation's history and development.

Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year

Chúc mừng Năm Mới! Wishing good fortune to those in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year! For those in many East and Southeast Asian countries, including Pacific Islanders, the Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays of the year and is all about ushering in luck and prosperity with family.

Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak to those in our community who observe! In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Muslims believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad. This year, Ramadan falls from February 18 to March 18, 2026.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

On February 18, we recognize those in our community observing Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is observed as a holy day of prayer and fasting in many Western Christian denominations. It marks the beginning of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ashes on their foreheads as a sign of penance. FCPS has designated this day as a religious and cultural observance day

Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.

Picture Day - March 3 📸

Spring Picture Day Banner 2026

What to expect on picture day

  1. All students will be photographed on March 3. There will not be retakes.
  2. When an order is placed online, the parent/guardian will receive a camera pass via email. This can either be printed or texted to the student and brought to picture day. The photographer will photograph the printed camera pass along with the student.
  3. If a student is not able to print their camera pass, that is not a problem. We will match up the student to their order manually in the production process.
  4. A parent may order from the flyer up until 24 hours after picture day. After 24 hours, the online ordering access may close. This will allow our imaging team to "Pull" all orders submitted and match them with the students photographed.
  5. When pictures are returned to school, all students that purchased pictures will receive their prepaid package. Any student that was photographed but did not order a package, will receive a "Proof" (PX) of their picture that was taken on picture day.

All proof packages offer parents a second opportunity to order prints. All orders are subject to shipping and handling costs of up to $8.50 and will be shipped directly to home.

Career Day - March 27

On Friday March 27, 2026 Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts & Sciences is hosting our annual Career Day extravaganza.  Our goal is to expand students' knowledge about the variety of career possibilities the future holds for them. By expanding their knowledge of different careers, we hope students will be motivated to connect what they are learning in school to their dreams and aspirations for their future.  We invite parents, relatives, friends, and other community members from all career fields to share their experiences with our students.

If you are interested in sharing your career experiences, please complete this form (Career Day Information Form) no later than Friday, March 6, 2026.  After March 6th presenters will be contacted by email by one of our school counselors who will provide you with additional information and answer any questions you may have about your participation in the event.  Please note, March 27th is a two hour early dismissal day and as result career day will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Should you have any additional questions, please direct them to either of our school counselors, Stephanie Schauder (sschauder@fcps.edu) or Garry Carter (glcarter@fcps.edu).

Planning for Life in and After High School for Students with IEPs

Families, caregivers, and educators of elementary and middle school students receiving special education services are invited to join Career and Transition Services (CTS) to learn about planning for life in and after high school.

The transition fair will take place on Wednesday, March 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Luther Jackson Middle School.

Ensuring the success of our students with disabilities after high school is dependent on what is known as transition planning. Please join CTS and other support service personnel for an evening focused on planning for the future.

An exhibitor fair will include teachers and representatives from CTS high school courses, career academies, age 18-22 programs, and transition services for students with disabilities.
