RAVEN REPORT

ff

Last week was short and sweet! We got a surprise visit from Dr. Reid on Tuesday and she loved learning about what we were working on instructionally at Poe and learning who is a SeaHawks fan :) Our teachers did some professional learning around responding to data which is one of the most essential parts of instruction. Many of our departments also came together on Wednesday to discuss updates to programming. Friday I learned more about the impact the approval of boundary changes will have on Poe which is ultimately going to lead to an increase in enrollment combined with the opening of our new AAP center. And Saturday I spent at the FCPS job fair meeting with lots of  possible candidates who want to be part of Poe. Stay warm everyone!

Raving Ravens

ll

This year we had 16 students try out for district band and 7 of them made it and 4 made alternate. Thank you so much to our amazing band director, Zac Gomez, and we are so proud of our students!

FRED Cards: Here’s what people are saying about our amazing staff. Below are some of the highlights from the recent FRED Cards that were submitted. The person’s name is who is being highlighted followed by what was said about them by a colleague. I will continue to highlight them in each Raven Report so keep them coming!

  • LaTonya Floyd:”Thank you for always being so supportive and stepping in whenever I need help, even when you're busy. I'm grateful I have you to rely on. I also respect how dedicated you are to the kids. You always take the time to understand what's really going on, and you handle discipline thoughtfully and constructively. I have learned a lot from watching you work.”
  • Leslie Carl: “Thank you so much for your ongoing help and willingness to answer my (sometimes ridiculous) questions. Seeing you each day is truly a joy.”
  • Yoon Hong: “Thank you for sharing so much about your family with me on morning duty!! It was amazing to hear about the adventures with your kids, brother, and nephew! I am so glad to know about these very special moments and I love that you shared them with me!”

Important Information

WIDA Testing Schedule: Students who are participating in WIDA testing will be testing on 2/10, 2/11, 2/19, and 2/20. On those days we will run a 2-hour delay schedule but without an actual delay. This will allow students who are testing in the morning an opportunity to test without missing any instruction. Students who are not testing will report to another location and have an opportunity to make up work, extension activities, or independent activities. If you have any questions please reach out to Elizabeth Edwards for any questions.

Parent Advisory Meeting 2/11: Please join us on Wednesday from 5:00-6:00pm in the library to learn from our partners from Northern Virginia Family Services to talk about raising teens and how to support them. This will be a two part series and they will be back in March for part two!

PTSA General Membership Meeting 2/11: Please join the PTSA for the General Membership Meeting in the library following the Parent Advisory Meeting from 6:00-7:00pm.

Meal Kits for Fasting Students: From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:

  • Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.

Help Keep Poe Middle School Phone-Free!: Please remind your student that cell phones and personal devices (AirPods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell) in your student’s Yondr pouch. Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool. If we confiscate your student’s phone, you will be asked to pick it up from the main office.

FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school. Visit FCPS’ cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions, including consequences for cell phone policy violations and exceptions for students with medical conditions or IEP/504 plans.

If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at 703-817-8300.

Warm Up FCPS – Divisionwide Spirit Day: Tired of all the cold weather? Let’s warm up with a little school spirit across the division!

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid is encouraging all FCPS students, teachers, and staff to shake the wrinkles out of their brightest outfits and tropical wear to help brighten everyone’s moods on Thursday, February 19.
