Roadrunner Rundown

February 9, 2026

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are glad to see that the lights at the Nutley St and Marshall Rd intersection are working. Thank you for your help in making arrival go smoothly this morning.

As we have had major shifts to schedules over the last two weeks we fully anticipate a return to full day learning, so a return to routine will help students be available this week.

Each month we utilize the Morning News Show to highlight cultural celebrations. As we celebrate Black History Month, ask your child some new facts they are learning in class or through the news show and hallway displays.

Have a great week.

When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning. If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.

February 18 - 3-Hour Early Release

Our next early release day will be February 18th. We will follow the same dismissal plan that each family has chosen previously. If your dismissal plans have changed, please fill out this form. Please make any changes by February 13th. We will not be able to accommodate changes on the day of the early release, except in case of emergencies.

The remaining 3-Hour Early Release Days (3/18, 4/22, 5/13) will follow the same dismissal schedule unless we hear otherwise from families.

Science Olympiad in FCPS

We would like to have a Science Olympiad team at Marshall Road next fall. This activity would  be offered before school for students in grades 3-5. FCPS created this video to highlight the positive impact this program has on young STEM minds. We are looking for a few parents to join one of our teachers as coaches for this wonderful program. Check out the Division A website and introductory video for more information. Please let Karlen Lehman (kslehman@fcps.edu) know if you are interested.

Volunteers Needed

Help Us Celebrate Our Everyday Heroes

Our bus drivers and crossing guards help our school day start and end safely—every single day. Rain or shine, early mornings and busy afternoons, they are there making sure our students arrive at school and get home safely. Their dedication often happens quietly and behind the scenes, but it makes a huge difference for our families.

Bus Driver and Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is coming up, and we need your help to make sure their hard work does not go unnoticed. The MRES PTA has set aside a budget to show our appreciation, but we need volunteers to deliver these thank-yous.

If you’re able to help, please reach out. Even a small amount of time goes a long way in letting them know how much they are valued. Contact: president@marshallroadpta.org

Let’s come together to thank the dedicated people who are an important part of our MRES community.

Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 - March 19, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 11 for week of February 18
  • February 16 for the week of February 23
  • February 23 for the week of March 2
  • March 2 for the week of March 9
  • March 9 for the week of March 16

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.
