A Message from Ms. Kirkland
Dear Families,
Thank you for your continued flexibility and patience with the recent school closings and delays. We truly appreciate your efforts to get your children to school despite the many schedule changes. Your partnership has been essential as we’ve worked to help students reestablish routines and get back into the rhythm of being in school each day.
I’d also like to share that our teachers have recently completed mid-year assessments of student progress in reading and math. In the coming weeks, teaching teams will be meeting to analyze these results and make instructional adjustments to best support student learning. Parents can access their child’s assessment results through ParentVUE. If you need assistance accessing ParentVUE, please contact the Mount Eagle main office at (703) 721-2100, and we will be happy to help.
Looking ahead to next week, our Multilingual Learners will begin taking the WIDA assessment. This assessment measures students’ progress in English language acquisition and is an important indicator of our school’s overall achievement. If your child is participating, you can support them by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep the night before testing days.

Join Us For Family Science Night
We need your help staffing this exciting event on Feb. 19th at Mount Eagle ES. The Children’s Science Center Lab staff will be on hand and ready to demonstrate each station, and we are looking for volunteers (minimum of 16 years old) to assist at the different activities. It will be a great evening of hands-on fun and learning for our families. All materials and instructions are provided for you, but we need at least 20 volunteers. Stations include robotics, forensic fun, exploring space, body and brain, electric piano, and more! Volunteers are needed from 5:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., and we ask that you please plan to stay for the entire time. If you have any questions please contact Jacqui Greene (jcgreene@fcps.edu).

Parents and guardians of students in grades 3-6 were previously notified that our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23.
The deadline to opt out is Friday, February 13.The survey will automatically be sent unless parents/guardians opt out by this date.

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:

Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.

Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.

Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.
Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.
If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.
FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage.

PTO Events
At Mount Eagle, every parent is a member of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). It's a great way to connect with other parents, learn about how to support your child, and have fun! There are many ways you can share your voice, talents, and time. Check out the PTO Website for more information. It's available in multiple languages.
Pizza and Board Games, Wednesday, February 11
Join other families for some fun and food with our first Pizza & Games night on February 11 from 6:00-7:30 pm. Pizza and drinks will be for sale, and families are invited to bring a favorite board game to share.

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.
Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.
