Herndon's Success Spotlight

Hornets Give Back: Herndon HS Baseball Mentors Future Stars at Winter Clinic

pictures of youth learning baseball

The Herndon High School baseball team stepped up to the plate this winter, lending their expertise to the young sluggers at the Herndon Reston Youth Baseball Winter Clinic. By trading their off-season downtime for coaching duties, these players not only sharpened local talent but also reinforced the strong community bond that keeps the town's diamond tradition alive.

Seeing Stars (And Planets, Too!)

Elementary school students visiting the planetarium.

This semester, the Herndon Planetarium is offering field trips to future Hornets learning about space in their Virginia science classes! Herndon Elementary 4th grade was up first in January, but we're looking forward to seeing the rest of our pyramid's 4th graders this year! We started each session with NASA coloring pages, then took students on a tour of our night sky and solar system. We finished by showing students a dome show from the comfort of our amazing theater style seats. Ms. Garvey and Mr. Hutton are excited to share space with everyone possible -- whether it's colleagues, our 200+ senior astronomy students, or almost 300 elementary students visiting our school this year.

Liberty District Stars: Relay Victory and Individual Gold

.

Margarita King, Anastasia Majer, Leah Luke, and Laurdes Rollins delivered a dominant performance to claim the Liberty District Championship title in the Girls 4x200M relay. Building on that momentum, Laurdes Rollins secured an individual victory as well, earning the title of Liberty District Champion in the Girls 55M Hurdles.

February Is Career and Technical Education Month

CTE Month

By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school including Business and Information Technology, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health and Medical Sciences, Marketing, Technology and Engineering Education, and Trade and Industrial Education. Since this is an elective, course offerings may vary by school. Learn more on the FCPS CTE webpage

CTE also offers summer programs for students to explore their programs. Enroll now!

Course Selection Timeline: Rising Juniors

.

The first week of February, school counselors will hold a mandatory meeting with their rising juniors. This session informed students of the upcoming and important academic advising and course selection process. To support this important process, students will meet individually with their school counselors through their English class sometime between February 6 and 13. Course selection materials and information are available on Herndon's course selection website.

  • February 09-18: Rising Junior Individual Academic Advising & Course Selection through English 10

Dates for the rising juniors and sophomores are available on the Herndon HS website.

Discovery Summit

Discovery Summit Logo

On February 10 and 11, Herndon is once again offering all of our students a conference-like experience that will give them opportunities to

  • explore new concepts
  • receive individualized academic help
  • recharge their battery
  • develop workplace readiness skills, and
  • dive deeper into their subjects of interest

This is one of the few moments in our students’ K-12 education where they actually have a choice in their learning. For those of you with students who are taking their WIDA tests on these days, don’t worry – students who are testing will still have opportunities to choose sessions they would like to attend.

We are so excited to bring the Discovery Summit back to our students!

WIDA ACCESS for ELLs

WIDA ACCESS for ELLS

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs will be given in our school over two days on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and Wednesday, February 11, 2026, as part of our Discovery Summit. Students will complete their WIDA test and have time to explore new subjects or receive academic support. Students  received their testing schedule and will receive information about the Discovery Summit details during the first week of February. To help support your child, please avoid appointments which may take your child out of school during the Discovery Summit. Also, it will help your child perform his or her best if he or she has had a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and comes to school with a positive attitude.

Presidents Day (Holiday)

.

All schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 16, for the Presidents' Day holiday. See the complete school year calendar.
