Principal's Message

Spartan Families,

It has certainly been a busy week at West Springfield, but it’s wonderful to see our students settling back into the flow of the second semester. As we move through February, we are proud to observe Black History Month. This is a vital time for our Spartan community to honor the enduring legacies, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans—both throughout history and within our own hallways and community.  The community is invited to a Black History Month Celebration — Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence — on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School.

Despite the busy pace, we’ve had some truly wonderful moments this week that remind us of the incredible spirit of our student body.

Weekly Highlights

  • Spartans Got Talent: What a fabulous event sponsored by the SGA! We had a great turnout, and all the acts were nothing short of spectacular. The talent on display was a testament to the creativity of our students and staff.
  • Championship Season: Our winter athletes are on fire! Please join us in a BIG congratulations to:
    • Boys Track & Boys Wrestling: Both teams were crowned Occoquan Regional Champions!
    • Rifle Team: Finished with a perfect 7-0 record, capturing the League Championship!
  • Signing Day Success: We are incredibly proud to celebrate 11 of our student-athletes who participated in Signing Day this week! We wish them the absolute best as they continue to do what they love at the collegiate level. Their hard work as a dedicated student-athlete has paid off.
  • Volleyball Recognition: Our State Champion Women’s Volleyball Team, along with Coach Noriega, was recognized at the School Board meeting. It was a proud moment for our school community to see these athletes honored for their dedication and championship season.

Important Dates & Reminders

  • Presidents' Day Holiday: A reminder that schools and offices will be closed this Monday, February 16th, in honor of the holiday.
  • Student Holiday: Tuesday, February 17th is a Teacher Workday. There will be no school for students. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the building on Wednesday!
  • Academic Advising: Advising for the upcoming school year is in full swing. Please take a moment this weekend to talk with your student about their course selections and goals for next year. Our counselors are working hard to ensure every Spartan is set up for success!

Building Updates

  • Parking & Safety: We are continuing to address parking challenges to ensure a safe arrival for all students. As a reminder, all Kiss & Ride students should use the Kiss & Ride Lane. Only those who have a visible FCPS/WSHS decal are permitted to use the main lot to park. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to keep everyone safe and a smooth flow of traffic.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for being the foundation of our SPARTAN Strong community. We hope you enjoy the long weekend and perhaps some warmer temperatures to help melt those lingering snow piles!

Go Spartans!

Survey on Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Now Open for All Families and Middle and High School Students

On Monday, all FCPS parents/caregivers and middle and high school students received an email to participate in a voluntary and confidential survey. (Please check your spam folder if you have not received it.)

Questions refer to proposed changes to FCPS’ SR&R document for next year. This document outlines the rules that students are expected to follow, and guidelines for consequences if those expectations are not met. Possible changes include:

  • Universal Discipline: Charts will list consequences and supports for students. They will help ensure that two students of the same grade will be treated fairly and receive the same level of support.
  • Standards for In-School Suspensions of Students with Disabilities: Creating standards for how in-school suspensions are handled for students who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan.
  • Accommodations for Multilingual Learner Student Statements: Providing translation accommodations when Multilingual Learner students provide statements about disciplinary incidents.

The survey will be open until Friday, February 20. Survey materials are available online.
