💡Spotlight on Specials: Art with Ms. Miller & Ms. Lucynski

Our GBE artists have been busy creating and exploring!
In Ms. Miller’s art room, kindergarteners are learning about architecture by using shapes to design restaurants, adding clever details to show what kind of restaurant they imagined. Next, they will move into expressive lion paintings while practicing how to mix and apply paint. First grade artists explored texture and process by sculpting clay penguins inspired by cold weather. They also created insect printing plates using foam shape stickers, modifying them with scissors before learning the steps of the printmaking process to create their own prints. Next up, first grade will begin dog paintings with colorful backgrounds inspired by Alma Thomas.
Second graders are finishing their “obvious architecture” drawings, designing eye-catching restaurants or stores with very clear functions. To wrap up the project, students participated in a gallery walk using “art money” to spend on their favorite designs, then discussed as a class which buildings earned the most and why. Second grade will be moving into painting next. Third grade artists designed imaginative, themed treehouses, demonstrating great craftsmanship and attention to detail. They will soon begin working on delicious-looking paintings inspired by the work of Wayne Thiebaud.
In Ms. Lucynski’s art room, third grade artists are beginning a professional birds unit, designing and constructing detailed 3D paper sculptures while focusing on form, balance, and craftsmanship. Students are learning how to translate real-world observations into dimensional artwork using paper-building techniques.
Fourth grade artists are starting an architecture-inspired project, designing buildings and storefronts as 3D paper sculptures. They will explore structure, function, and visual interest as they transform flat paper into sturdy, dimensional designs.
Fifth grade artists are beginning fantasy creature sculptures, combining imagination with engineering as they design and build original 3D paper creatures. Students will focus on problem-solving, proportion, and creative details to bring their ideas to life.
Sixth grade artists are starting fantastical monster sculptures, designing bold and imaginative 3D paper forms that emphasize expressive features, movement, and strong construction techniques.

2026 Franklin Band & Orchestra Camp – Registration Now Open!
Franklin Band and Orchestra Camp is a local summer program designed to develop young musicians of ALL levels and is open to rising 4th through 9th graders. Students participate in band or orchestra ensembles that meet their ability and experience level, aiming to further develop these musicianship skills throughout the camp experience. Each day, students will have the opportunity to grow musically through both large ensemble performance and small group/instrument-specific clinics. One day of camp is roughly equivalent to four weekly elementary band or strings lessons during the schoolyear! Franklin Band & Orchestra Camp is a fantastic summer opportunity for young musicians to accelerate their musical development!
