A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation with arrival and dismissal. By following our protocols, we have been able to ensure safe and timely transitions for students each day. We also extend our sincere thanks to Bush Hill Presbyterian Church for allowing our staff to use their parking lot for overflow parking last week. This support helped keep vehicles off Westchester and reduce congestion around the school. This week, we are using our school blacktop for overflow parking and hope to be back to normal operations as soon as the snow melts!

"Snowcrete" has certainly presented challenges, but it has been encouraging to see our community come together to clear sidewalks and bus stops so students can safely get to school each day.

Friday night was very exciting at Bush Hill with lots of students and families winning prizes at our annual PTA Bingo Night. A huge thanks to our PTA Board and volunteers for a successful night. We were also thrilled that Mrs. Gordon came to join us Friday night!

Over the weekend, we were proud to attend the second Bush Hill Special Olympics Unified Basketball tournament of the season. It was a joy to see families, staff, and community members cheering on our students and staff. Thank you to Ms. Peters, Ms. McGroddy, and Mr. Schmidt for all of their hard work in making this season such a success.

Family Science Night is coming up in two weeks on February 24. We will need volunteers to help run each station. Please see the information below to sign up.

Finally, we are excited to welcome our new Family Liaison, Eli Santana, who began her position yesterday. Ms. Santana is available to support families in a variety of ways and can be reached through the Main Office phone number or by email eesantana@fcps.edu

Attendance Matters

February 2nd- Attendance Table: K-6

BHES's 2025-2026 Attendance Goal: 8% chronic absenteeism or less

Percentage of students NOT currently chronically absent

93.1%

Percentage of students currently chronically absent (missed 10% or more of the school days so far this year)

6.9%

There’s not much we can do about the winter weather, but there are two key steps every parent can take to help avoid absences this year: Make back-up plans for bad weather and keep your children healthy.

Office of Transportation Services

Winter Weather Transportation Reminders

The FCPS Office of Transportation Services will notify families of any changes to bus stops due to road conditions. Until roads and bus stops are completely clear of snow, there may be some bus delays. Families can monitor the Bus Delay website to get up-to-date information on routes that are running more than 10 minutes late. Parents will also receive an email if a bus is more than 30 minutes late.

Get Your Weather Updates ASAP

Be among the first to know when school is delayed or closed due to inclement weather by:

  • Updating your cell phone number in ParentVUE to receive urgent text alerts.
  • Downloading the FCPS mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Then adjust your phone settings to allow for the app to send push notifications.

Help Keep Our Schools Phone-Free!

Please remind your child that cell phones and personal devices (earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) cannot be used during passing periods. Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool, with some limited exceptions for students with IEPs.

Phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell) — except for high school students during lunchtime in designated lunch spaces.

FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school. Visit our Cell Phone Policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions, including consequences for cell phone policy violations and exceptions for students with medical conditions or IEP/504 plans.

If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call your child’s school.
